#fork

1 post1 participant0 posts today

Today is the day. #Puppet is dead, long live #OpenVox

Background: Perforce bought Puppet in 2022, betrayed the #FOSS community and changed the license. This resulted in a #fork called #OpenVoxProject, but old puppet releases still worked, so many #DevOps did not care enough to switch.

Yesterday the release key for the free puppet packages expired. It is unlikely that they will renew those keys.

It's time to move on. voxpupuli.org/openvox/ is a drop-in replacement. #FOSS saved the day again!

Vox PupuliOpenVox Automation FrameworkVox Pupuli is a collective of Puppet module, tooling and documentation maintainers working together for the greater good.

This is a call for people who can program and develop free applications for f-droid. This application is very useful. You can scan documents with the camera and it looks like a photocopy. But the person developed it announced back in February that they are giving it up definitely. That they accepted some pull requests on the project but would archive it without a new release because they really do not have time to put on it.

The way now is to step forward and make a fork

Mozilla focusing on IA, advertising, changing ToS and removing mentions to "we don't sell your data" is like Google abandoning the "don't be evil" motto.

From a privacy-first web browser fighting for a more free and open internet to just another big tech throwing their roots in the trash bin.

They were changing Firefox here and there to be more Chrome-like, and now they are changing themselves to mirror Google.

So sad, so sad.

If you're looking for alternatives:

- LibreWolf
- Fennec
- Waterfox
- Zen Browser
- Palemoon

Instead of using a Chromium-based browser, I'd suggest to keep using something based on Mozilla code.

Keep using and supporting independent developers working on Firefox forks, so we don't get even more trapped with Google code and decisions (Manifest v3, remember?).

Continuing my never-seen-before #BetterThanMastodon series here is reason number 348732 why any Misskey fork is just an overall more pleasant and fun experience than dry, dusty old Masto.

Seasonal Effects

Simply toggle a setting in Settings (the natural home of a Setting) and at odd times throughout the year your screen will delight you with a simple animation keyed to whatever time of year you find yourself in. Today, it started snowing.
:blobscarf:

The video below shows the effect in action but please forgive the jerkiness of it - I can assure you that the effect is buttery smooth playing for real. The snow is also beautifully animated, just the right soft speed and actually drifting left and right now and again.

At present this feature only seems to have two, the beautiful snow here and falling cherry blossom in spring (to be expected given Misskey's Japanese origins) but even just these two offer a little unexpected magic into your social media experience, much like opening curtains to find it snowing for real...if you're someone who still has that child-like glee inside them.

What are you waiting for? Migrate to a Misskey fork today!

🎧 Winamp Taken Down: Too Good For This Open Source World
— Hackaday

「 The source for the Windows version of the venerable music player was released on GitHub three weeks ago, and after some derision over its licence terms, a bunch of possible open source violations, and the inadvertent release of some proprietary third-party code, it’s been taken down 」

No, free software licenses do not typically require developers or maintainers to accept contributions from users. Projects may choose to review, accept, or reject contributions from users based on their own criteria.
However, most #FOSS licenses grant the right to #fork the project: users and developers often organize to do so when they feel their contributions were unfairly rejected.

Software developers: If you #fork a repository on #GitHub, all your commits will be public. And available forever. Even if you set the fork to private or ever delete the commit.

This is by design. If you don't like it, don't fork repositories or don't use GitHub.

(In fact, this applies to every repository that is "related" to a public repository.)

#LinguaLibre's #Occitan Whistled map is willfully easy to hack and adapt to other regional #languages. Our will is to put our villages historic names and voices back on the map and its territories. Following's @dmontagne request, I drafted a "Replication" section which guide a willing contributor to replicate the methodology and fork project for its language. Writing is ongoing. It will indeed need more work ! cc @Poslovitch github.com/hugolpz/NamesOfTheL
