Just received the 'please vote for me' email from my local (Labor) MP.
I replied, politely explaining that I cannot vote for him because his government has chosen not to take any action in response to the recommendations from Peta Murphy's gambling inquiry
Sports gambling is a plague on American society but I hadn't considered this particularly ghoulish aspect of why it's a plague:
Men in states with legalized sports gambling are measurably more likely to beat up their partners when their football team loses.

@gbhnews has a new podcast series, “Scratch & Win,” which is about the rise of America’s most successful lottery. Expect tales of organized crime, the FBI, and U.S. politics — just another day in America, in other words.
We lose $32b a year to online gambling. A new bill might help reduce it
By Alan Kohler
About $32 billion a year is now lost by people betting online, mostly by those who can't afford it. A bill that would force online betting outfits to display to each client what they're losing, and what they've lost, each time they log on is hoped to change that.

Recent reports reveal that multiple Japanese entertainers and pro baseball players have made a habit of visiting online casinos, which are illegal to use in Japan. The rapid growth in online casino usage has the government considering whether it should block access.
This is all the luck I've had recently. I'm up 5 kr. Now is a good time to pull out the profits and live like a king.

Only well-regulated capitalism can work, so its disappointing (although hardly surprising) to find another regulator (this time the Gambling Commission) being much too cosy & accommodating to the sector it regulates; secret accommodations with the sector is the classic symptom of regulatory capture.
For a regulated capitalism to work, the regulators need to be sceptical & tough on those they regulate, but the UK pretty commonly fails this test!

Why is gambling such a problematic addiction, when it doesn't involve any chemical intake?
I explain this, and more, for BBC Science Focus Magazine
‘Gambling companies are covertly tracking visitors to their websites and sending their data to Facebook’s parent company without consent in an apparent breach of data protection laws.
The information is then being used by Facebook’s owner, Meta, to profile people as gamblers and flood them with ads for casinos and betting sites’ https://www.theguardian.com/society/2025/feb/08/gambling-firms-secretly-shared-users-data-with-facebook-without-permission #privacy #gdpr #law #surveillance #tech #advertising #gambling
And with the main parties in hock to gambling companies, will anything happen? Like feck it will. Labour and the Tories will sell anyone and everything for power.
