Fritillaria meleagris, the snakes head fritillary.
The only flower I know that has a chequered pattern on its petals.
These flourish in my little front garden bringing springtime interest to an area that is swamped by large perennials later in the summer.
They are naturalised, (growing wild), in parts of the UK.

It wouldn't be spring without daffodils and I've been out to Painswick Rococo Garden to see their display. This Cotswold garden may be known for its quirky buildings and winter snowdrops but the daffs are shaping up to be every bit as good.

The bear pit at Sheffield Botanic Gardens was built in 1836 to house Bruin, a black bear kept there to 'entertain' visitors.
The pit later became 'Yorkshire's largest compost pit'.
The bear statue, beloved of Sheffield children for the last twenty years, is made of steel and is 2.4 metres tall.

Recently I learned something new about using vinegar to kill weeds,
For several years I have used 30% strength vinegar in a ‘chemical resistant’ spray bottle to spot spray weeds. This is a very effective weed (and grass) killer.
This spring I sprayed some weeds but the result was not what I expected. The weeds stayed green and growing.
Turns out that the acidity of vinegar declines over time when exposed to air. The vinegar I used this spring was a bit left in a gallon jug that I purchased last year. A few days ago I bought a new gallon jug, sprayed some weeds and they died just as I expected.
If you want to try this, do not use grocery store vinegar. It is not nearly strong enough. I buy mine at the local big box lumber/hardware store. Make sure what you buy says 30%. Look for it where they have cleaning supplies. And if you use a standard spray bottle then the acid will destroy the spray mechanism after a bit. That is why I use a ‘chemical resistant' spray bottle.
Also, when I spray this stuff I am wearing rubber gloves that come halfway to my elbows.

Thomas Dambo’s Trolls are in town! The “TROLLS: Save the Humans” exhibition at the Memphis Botanic Gardens features six of these larger-than-life sculptures displayed throughout the grounds. They are made entirely of recycled materials.

I’m stupidly pleased with how this is shaping up.
It’s on the main route through the garden and can be seen from the house so I’ve planted it with lots of early things. Putting hellebores alongside steps also makes it easier to photograph them!
I’ve spotted a few gaps - more cyclamen needed - but it’s taking shape.
