Gerne boosten/teilen.

2,000 #DMCA Notices Took Down 31,151 #GitHub Projects in #2024
Targeted repositories included copied code, but also pirate apps, IPTV playlists, and many #Nintendo Switch emulators. Circumvention takedowns increased slightly, but GitHub notes these continue to be heavily scrutinized.
When circumvention complaint moves forward, GitHub reaches out to developers before taking any action. This allows developers to address issues, without taking their entire project offline.

First time I ran into this. Every time I clone,

github.com/buttondown/docs

It only has the .git folder in there and nothing else. When I download the Zip, though, everything is as how it should be and I see all the folders and all the files. Can any #Git expert troubleshoot the cloning glitch? I tried multiple ways including SSH. #Github

Also lieber gar kein Englisch mehr.

ALARM!

@bagder I can't rank the issues for all of FOSS projects but to add one missing in your suggestions:

The increasing fragmentation of development platforms after a phase of >10 years of concentration on #GitHub.com. I think its decline started with the acquisition by #Microsoft. That wasn't good either but fragmentation makes it harder to get contributions by newcomers who are not yet part of your platform.

@simon No. It's simply that - in our capitalist dystopia where private property is unfortunately still a thing - when you're on someone else's private property, you're there on their terms (and whims).

The terms of @Codeberg and their European laws are undoubtedly better than those of GitHub and the US. And Codeberg is undoubtedly going to be a better host (in the "party host" sense) than #GitHub. I've seen communities provide much greater transparency of process than any company.

Continued thread

Remember - the rest of the #OpenStreetMap #FreeSoftware ecosystem is still on #GitHub. The OSM website, the iD editor, @osmandapp, @vespucci_editor, @everydoor, @osmapp ...despite offers to help with the move.

I know the devs to be otherwise very friendly and supportive people, but on this issue we are at an impasse.

Why do they wait to be abused by #proprietary platforms when they could avoid the whole problem from the start?

On the train ride back from Patna (#BiharFOSS), @ravi and I sardonically thanked Trump for the state of things in the US, which may have been why #GitHub disabled the #OrganicMaps repo and forced them to move to #FreedomRespecting #Forgejo.

"This will hopefully teach people why it's important to boycott #proprietary platforms. But why do people always wait around for such things to pass? #FreeSoftware activists had been warning them for like 10 years!" (Also...Sourceforge???)

🎉❗ We have just released 𝗼𝗵𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲-𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗲𝘁, a new software library on GitHub that facilitates the transformation of raw OpenStreetMap history data into the 𝗚𝗲𝗼𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘁 format, making it more accessible and efficient for spatial data analysis.
With ohsome-planet, we make a big step toward the development of 𝗼𝗵𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝟮.𝟬.

#GitHub tip:

Don’t post “Any updates?” style comments on open source threads. Any updates would be there already. Open source is a gift; bugging maintainers acts like you're entitled to results. I just mark such comments as spam.

If you want to see something done, do something to help: research specifications, find an existing implementation, write a test case, draft the docs, write a draft implementation, do some code review, test the PR locally, or just anything to help the project.

@liaizon I feel like I *might* have mentioned this before, but the #Android developer #Goodwy is making a suite of apps that copy their #iOS counter-parts.

play.google.com/store/apps/dev

They are free, claim to be privacy focused, the code is up on #GitHub.

They have a Dialer, Contacts, Messages, Files and - the one you are looking for - a Gallery app: play.google.com/store/apps/det
