Question for #blender3d #greasepencil folks: Is this a bug (that I should file) or a feature? I can use geometry nodes to turn a mesh into a grease pencil layer mask, but only if I *don't* merge the generated layer with an existing mask layer of the same name. If I just prepend the layer then everything works the way I want it to (the existing layer is empty). Screenshot shows desired outcome, but the setup needed feels like a hack.

I made another quick #blender #greasepencil painting tonight to put my recent color palette construction experiments to the test.

I painted this with the "pen" preset this time instead of the "airbrush" this time since the airbrush is buggy. I'm feeling more confident in this being a viable digital painting tool for me if I put in more practice.

A deep blue atmospheric expanse. There's a dusty thin cloud layer below the view and another cloud layer above. The cloud layers both fade out to the same dark deep blue color. This could be a void in a large cloud or layers at a dark time of place. In the upper cloud layer there several groups of indistinct lights suggesting a large stationary structure that is obscured from view. The colors are unnaturally colored and ambiguous. It might read like the lower cloud layer is vaguely purple and the lights in the upper layer are yellow or orange, but it is a trick of the composition.

Well, I had a go at trying to do an atmospheric painting with the #GreasePencil airbrush, and found that the image in the viewport does this amazing quantization thing and it chugs like crazy after you lay down a few washes. Curiously the rendered image doesn't have the quantization, but it also looks way different because I was painting with the assumption it would.

Hazy atmospheric abstract digital art. There's this weird unintentional quantizing thing going on when viewed in the Blender viewport that gives it a weird sorta oily appearance, but like not as in oil paints but as in like road juice. I wasn't really going for anything in particular with this, but I guess it looks kinda like a wall of clouds in front of a sun set or something.
The rendered version does not have the weird quantizing effect, but just looks like a blurry mess because I couldn't see what I was doing. I don't like this version at all. It's a disappointment.
