Protect 'valuable' Canadian #healthdata from Trump's AI aspirations, experts urge https://www.ctvnews.ca/health/article/protect-valuable-canadian-health-data-from-trumps-ai-aspirations-experts-urge/ “Medical researchers and lawyers say our rocky relationship with the U.S. creates an urgent need to protect a critical Canadian resource: patient health information that can be used to train artificial intelligence.
“Our health data is the most valuable health data set in the world,” said Natalie Raffoul, an intellectual property lawyer in Ottawa. (1/3)
Faster diagnoses. Personalized care. Life-saving research. AI promises all of this—but only if we unlock the data. The fix? Open interoperability.

I just wanted to write a post about the most shocking major data leak fuckups revealed by awesome people at #38C3 but I can't because they just keep on adding new horrifying things
These methods can easily be abused to disclose people’s sexuality, harass them at home & work, discriminate against them based on their religious beliefs, surveil them when they attend protests and persecute them for accessing health care. #HealthData #privacy
None of my business, of course. But I stumbled on this today while searching F-Droid for something else. So I'm sharing it in a spirit of solidarity, mutual aid, and health privacy.
Anyone looking for a respectful menstrual cycle tracking app that doesn't track you? One where you - or someone you trust - can check that it keeps all data on your device (source code published under GPLv3.0)?
You could do worse than #Drip;

Another is our enduring focus on reproductive #privacy + #HealthData – find out more from our thread in response to last night’s #SOTU2024 address, which centered the importance of this issue: https://cdt.org/collections/reproductive-rights/
Looking forward to a deep-dive discussion at #PrivacyCamp24 comparing #healthdata regimes in the #EU and #UK and how (and if at all) they protect #patients' rights.

"Enter the national data platform - the foundation for a $700m-plus overhaul of data and digital health..."
"The new platform will need to be able to take over, merge and make sense of petabytes of data, multiplying itself daily in 28 disparate, siloed health data warehouses, and processed by a motley, often ancient crew of hospital apps numbering in the thousands."

The recent data breach of 23andMe affects over 7 million people and is a great reminder why you should never reuse passwords for multiple accounts.
The company claims that a small user base were breached after a credential stuffing attack. When asked why breaching a small subset of users can affect over 7 million people, the company stated that in their preliminary investigation, it's likely the attackers were able to scrape additional people's data through their optional DNA Relatives feature that allows participants to find out other users they may be related to.
Also a good reminder regarding how much data these companies have and how they can correlate genetic information where a small breach can affect so many. It's mind boggling how much health information these companies collect.

The Commission version prohibited the use of #healthData even with consent, and limited data used in platform work to that 'intrinsically connected and strictly necessary' — that has gone in the Council Version
"This weekend, 17 of the 20 #NHS trusts that were using #Meta Pixel confirmed they had pulled the #tracking tool from their websites."
It's 2023 and:
"Eight issued apologies to patients. Multiple trusts said they (...) were not aware that they were sending #patient data to #Facebook."
