Oh yeah, here’s the project I’ve been working on :) a lil Girl Scout cookie booth AAC board for nonspeaking kids, kids with apraxia of speech, kids with selective mutism, or even Deaf/HoH kids who want a backup option to sign or speech.
A lot of folks realized that the sale side helps Deaf/HoH folks order, and a few more requested a translation to Spanish and Hindi for their customer base that speak those languages. I provide them all free, with variations for both bakeries (ABC and LBB) in my girl scouting graphics dropbox, bit.ly/GSfilesbyLondon
Haben Girma, a Black American disability rights activist, who is Deaf Blind. She talks about disability, accessibility, and how the idea that "faster is better" is ableist.
The tiktok is captioned, with a transcript in the description. Haben also gives a verbal image description.
The talk is an excerpt from the panel she was on during the Whitehouse Disability Pride Convening.

It's #DisabilityPrideMonth
Time for my annual PSA for #Video Creators:
*Subtitles Are Vital*
Also, plan on them going Over your video
When you put important info at the bottom of the screen I have to pause, turn off subtitles, rewind, play it to see the info, pause, & turn subtitles back on- unless I miss it entirely because the subtitles hide it!
I’m currently learning ASL and consequently loads about Deaf culture. And in the past, I worked with lots of blind folks (in a social enterprise focused on giving sighted people the experience of what it’s like to be blind) and am still friends with a few of them.
With my insight, albeit limited, into both of these disabilities, I am getting the feeling that Deaf culture is much more pronounced than Blind culture. With my blind friends I mostly noticed it in their sense of humour. Meanwhile, Deaf culture seems to encompass so much more. I wonder whether that is because the language is different. Braille is a stand-in for our usual alphabet, so blind folks interact with language very similarly to sighted hearing folks. Whereas sign languages are much more concept-driven languages. My brain thinks differently when I’m trying to sign! So it stands to reason that this would influence culture too.
These are very fresh unfiltered thoughts. Curious if anyone has some insight/input.
@futurebird I’ve been using hearing aids from Rhodes. They include Bluetooth, and I use them as earbuds. As I am half-deaf, I use audiologists. Another brand to seek out is Siemens; those were my favorite brand ever, German brand and good quality of sound. Due to the circumstances of my hearing loss, cost is no option, but I have not heard of a hearing aid with 9 microphones! For more recommendations, check out Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA). #HOH #HearingAids #Deaf
Is there a cool top of the line sleek hearing aid with great software and noise canceling options and it also plays music and sounds amazing with like nine lil microphones and 5 tiny speakers and it looks amazing and stuff?
1. my mom needs one and I have not been impressed with what others who use them say about them.
2. if I ever need one I expect it to do all this and more.
What is the state of the art? Does anyone care? #hearing #hearingAid #gadgets #questions #HardOfHearing #Deaf #HOH

As #DisabilityPrideMonth winds down, I haven't really talked about being #HardOfHearing.
PSA for #Video Creators:
SUBTITLES ARE IMPORTANT, USE THEM
Also, they are designed to go OVER the video.
This means that when you put important info at the bottom of the screen I have to pause, turn off subtitles, rewind, play it to see your text, pause, & turn subtitles back on... unless I just don't see the info because the subtitles block it.
When making video media, stop fucking censoring your captions when you don't censor your voice. It is unbelievably shitty to #Deaf and #HoH communities and just generally horrific #accessibility practices.
I don't give a fuck about your video being demonitized. I don't care about your video being hidden. If you say "fuck" your captions should say "fuck", not "fudge" or "frick". If you can't do this extremely simple thing, don't swear or don't make it, I guarantee your video is not that important.
It is such a simple thing to do. People who rely on captions shouldn't get your censored information just because you care about them so little that the pennies you'll get from YouTube are more important than accessibility as a whole.
