Glassware: Double old-fashioned
Method: Combine lemon, orgeat, rye, and bitters in a shaker with ice and shake. Add the beer directly to the serving glass, then open pour the shaker into the glass. Garnish with mint.

An original by servedbysoberon on IG, but I've modified it to be more beer-forward by downplaying the sweet/sour a bit. The beer is called Frida, a #NEIPA by local brewer Braukollektiv in #Freiburg. Great summer smasher!

MICHELADA

1½ oz lime juice
2 dashes Maggi liquid seasoning
4 dashes Worcestershire sauce
2 dashes Tabasco sauce
12 oz Mexican lager beer

Garnish: salted rim, lime wheel
Method: First, salt the rim of the glass by rubbing it with a cut-open lime and rolling it in a shallow bowl filled with Tahín or salt. Now build the drink in glass, adding ingredients in the order listed. Once the beer is in, garnish with a lime wheel and add a few small ice cubes then serve.

Maggi seasoning is really easy to find in Germany, but if not by you then soy sauce is a decent substitute. Tabasco also up for substitution according to your prefs. What isn’t negotiable is drinking this in the sunshine!

One more mod if you’re feeling sassy is to serve with a side of danger, a neat shot alongside that someone can add as they wish. Tequila and Mezcal are excellent choices!

½ oz chocolate liqueur

Garnish: chocolate powder
Method: Combine all ingredients in a shaker with ice and shake. Double strain into a small glass and dust with chocolate powder as garnish.

WINTER BASIL SMASH

handful fresh basil
1 oz lemon juice
¾ oz simple syrup
2 oz aquavit

Garnish: basil leaf
Method: Set aside one basil leaf as garnish. In a shaker, muddle remaining basil leaves with lemon juice and simple syrup. Add aquavit and ice cubes, shake, and double strain into a rocks glass with fresh ice cubes.

An interesting riff on the Gin Basil Smash, it's refreshing yet has a touch of warming notes from the aquavit. Don't be scared off by the two full shots. This one is balanced nicely by the generous amounts of lemon and simple. I had Thai basil on hand when I took the photo and I thought it worked well in the cocktail, even though the spec calls for the Italian variety. I first saw this one on IG from theeducatedbarfly.

THREE DOTS AND A DASH

½ oz lime juice
½ oz orange juice
½ oz honey syrup
¼ oz falernum
¼ oz allspice dram
1½ oz Rhum Agricole Vieux ❽
½ oz Blended Aged Rum ❸
1 dash Angostura bitters

Garnish: three maraschino cherries, pineapple chunk
Method: Add all the ingredients to a drink mixer tin. Fill with 12 oz crushed ice and 4-6 agitator cubes. Flash blend and open pour with a gated finish into a footed pilsner glass. If you don't have a drink blender (I don't) then shaking obviously does the trick.

For the garnish use one spear for three maraschino cherries and the pineapple chunk. Place horizontally on the rim of the glass. It represents V for victory in Morse code •••—

This drink is a certified tiki classic from Don the Beachcomber during WWII, later decoded by Jeff Beachbum Berry, and republished in the Smuggler's Cove book, page 43.

Stirring my way through the cold weather. I found it hard to pick out the base spirits. Rather, they intensified the bitters and amaro bringing out strong spicy flavors balanced out nicely by the syrup. I found this one on IG chips_classic_cocktails.

Garnish: lemon peel
Method: Use an atomizer to rinse your serving glass with absinthe. Combine the remaining ingredients in a stirring glass with ice and stir. Strain into the glass, express lemon peel, and use as garnish.

Another boozy stir for a cold winter night. This version of the legendary cocktail comes from the book Cure: New Orleans drinks and how to mix 'em, page 29. I finally found an affordable bottle of Sazerac in Germany and thought the titular cocktail was the logical test pilot. For the photo I also tested a new lighting setup. Not 100% happy with it, but you gotta start somewhere.

Method: Combine all ingredients with ice in a stirring glass and stir. Strain over a large rock, express orange peel, and garnish.

I saw this original from @CityzenWhit@c.im and knew I had to stir it up pronto! It uses a fun combo ingredient called Humbug Spices from Brian "shakerofspirits" Maxwell (see link for recipe). A delicious sipper!

Method: combine all ingredients (equal parts) in a shaker with ice. Shake and strain into a chilled coupe. Garnish with lime zest twist.

A riff on the Last Word that swaps gin for mezcal. Simple as that!

I came across this cocktail in The Savoy Cocktail book and have to make it because it uses Creme de Violette. Sounds disgusting but I do this for you and science.

2/2 If you don't have a cocktail smoker you can up the Laphroaig to half an ounce for a similar result.
You can also put cherry wood chips into a small metal condiment cup set on top of a fire resistant surface. Light the chips with a creme brulee torch and invert the glass over the smoldering chips while you make the cocktail. They charge all sorts of money for cocktail smokers but this does virtually the same thing.

Those who know me know I collect amaros (amari?). I currently have over 65 and can't keep up as it seems, more and more amaros are flooding the market. I found this yesterday and the idea of Fred's amaro made me laugh. It's Italian and has good reviews. It's creator gathers all the herbs himself, makes each into a single infusion and then blends them into the final result.
