Much of the autumn/winter sown veg have been harvested but enough’s still there for picking. The beds are quickly being replenished with the early spring sown salad crops. #GrowYourOwn #HomeGrown #NoDig

A raised bed running down the side of a bricked house wall. The bed is netted and has four main growing bays and a bed running the length of the wall. It is an adaption of a key hole bed design used in permaculture. The entirety of the beds can be accessed from three kneeling bays while maximising the growing space. A thin layer of fresh sieved home made compost was recently added. Currently growing or recently sown in the beds are kale, carrots, winter radish, sage, green onions, babington’s leeks, broad beans, pak choi, red mizuna, shallots, lambs lettuce, rocambole, spring onions, chives, radish, beetroot, beetroot leaf, Welsh onion, lettuce, rocket, horn of plenty, land cress, mustard greens, lovage, wasabina, skirret and parsley. Two black water butts at one end are collecting rainwater for watering the beds. A pathway and a wooden garden fence are to the side of the raised bed.

I was very surprised that the veggie garden handled the total neglect over those 5 days so well. Including a day over 40C. The strawberries were slightly non-plussed but revived.

The first task after arriving home late arvo was a deep water for the veg garden, and to pick produce for dinner. More picking today - so many chillies have ripened! More dehydrating for them.

My winter indoor garden really helps cheer and 'ground' (!) me. We get dwarf Bok Choy, mustards, arugula and mini lettuces to supplement our salads of raw local red and green cabbage, carrots, apples and home baked beans Just seeing the growth and tending to the seedlings and growing plants, then snipping the leaves when they're ready helps defeat the winter blues. I have to try to pace the sowings so that the harvests don't all come at once.

An indoor 3 tiered garden with growing green (with some red) plants of different sizes. There is room for more and a small plastic 'nursery' tub on the bottom tier which has not much else on it. The garden is brightly lit.

@Pollinators This is its second winter in situ and the worm box is still going strong. The thick leaf covering has insulated it well in our mild winter.

I’ll sieve the contents first. The castings added to some home made compost, perlite and some coconut coir or leaf mould made good soil blocks last year.

I’ll use some castings in an extract for inoculating seeds with. With direct sown seeds I’ll add some castings to the seed drills. #HomeGrown #GardenAmendments #Wormcast

Overhead view of the opened wormbox with the leave covering moved to one side. Harvested wormcasts are in a yellow trug and have been shovelled out with a mini spade which is lying next to the wormbox. Sawdust and wood shavings cover the pathways surrounding the wormbox.

A wormbox buried in an allotment plot with a wooden lid fashioned from an old fence long ago painted blue but now faded. The worm box itself is made from pallet wood and covered wire mesh to keep wildlife out. Veg scraps and other organic matter worm food are added weekly to one side of the box. When one side is full to the top of castings the worm food is added to the other side of the box. The worms will migrate over to where the food is leaving very few worms still in the wormcast side when they are harvested.

Upcoming jobs before spring are to clear the overgrown front half plot and tidy up and re-lay a hedge along the boundary to the nature reserve. #GrowYourOwn #HomeGrown #NoDig #Gardening #Allotment

Some hedge clearing with piles of brambles and woody brash material that have been cleared out from the existing hedge. Three water butts are now visible. Two are metal and one is black plastic. The hedge was completely covering the back two butts. The front water butt is connected to the tapped water supply for the site. A hedge with top bindings forms the barrier between the nature reserve and the allotment site. The hedge was laid a few years ago. There is a lot of new growth that can be used to bulk up the hedge and promote new growth.

Also hidden in there are some raspberries, other thornless soft fruit currently, pun intended, unknown maybe loganberries or tayberries, rosemary, rhubarb and red currants and now some recently added piles of woody material from the initial clearing of the hedge.

Two compost bays are in front of the shed. Beyond the shed is a plot that acts as a buffer between the allotments and a nature reserve. The buffer plot has been recently cut back.

An allotment plot has different coloured strips of wood chip mulch, fresh compost, weeded soil, sawdust and shavings from yew, ash, oak, sycamore and three remaining rows of raspberries still have their green weeds. After weeding the raspberries will be mulched with some composted stable manure.

Menu, in the end, thank you to all the suggestions! Starters- Greek dolmades with lots of herbs in the filling, Sourdough bruschetta with cherry toms and basil. Homegrown olives. Mains of fresh pasta with pesto, button squash, tromboncini, cherry toms, leek. Parmesan for on top. Sourdough garlic bread, Greek salad based on cucumber and green beans.
