Csepp 🌢<p>One really nice thing I miss from <a href="https://merveilles.town/tags/GNOME" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GNOME</span></a> that both <a href="https://merveilles.town/tags/i3wm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>i3wm</span></a> and <a href="https://merveilles.town/tags/sway" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sway</span></a> have is the ability to forcefully toggle fullscreen and change window sizes below the minimum. :sadlinux:<br>Practical example: some Wine apps will lose fullscreen after alt-tab and then refuse to go back until restarted, which is less than ideal if I'm hosting a server for a LAN party.</p>

njoseph :fbx:<p>I briefly tried i3 window manager, but missed some of the conveniences from <a href="https://social.masto.host/tags/Gnome" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Gnome</span></a>.</p><p>Installed PaperWM extension for Gnome and the two others recommended by them - Switcher and Dash to Dock. I got rid of the gaps between windows to make it feel more like i3.</p><p>Give it a shot if you are tired of the default application switching experience in Gnome. It is really easy to try out. </p><p>You might also miss the system stats from i3. There is a default Gnome extension called System Monitor for this. <a href="https://social.masto.host/tags/i3wm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>i3wm</span></a></p>

Dane :Debian:<p>I think I lost a <a href="https://alpha.polymaths.social/tags/crankyoldnerd" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CrankyOldNerd</span></a> credit today.</p><p>I was fully intending to set up <a href="https://alpha.polymaths.social/tags/i3wm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>i3wm</span></a> on this <a href="https://alpha.polymaths.social/tags/stinkpad" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Stinkpad</span></a> x260 (my affectionate name for the series), and I was getting along pretty well:</p><p>i3 instead of sway<br>xfce4-terminal instead of foot (alacritty is lovely, but doesn't have a server mode to conserve RAM)<br>xinput for disabling the annoying trackpad<br>lovely xbanish for getting the annoying cursor out of my way<br>picom for transparency effects</p><p>It's the last step that was a bit of a snag. I remembered that the last time I daily-drove i3, I actually used urxvt with false-transparency than actually using real transparency with picom, because I could never figure out a reliable way to make the other windows not appear underneath the current one when using tabbed windows (which is my M.O.).</p><p>So, I reverted to Sway, because the way it handles transparency just works a lot better.</p><p>🤷‍♂️</p>

One time 5 years ago when I was trying to get along with Gnome, I had two conflicting extensions that filled up /var (which was /, derp) within minutes with log messages. <em>sigh</em>. Sway is great, and does absolutely everything I need (even though it's very slow to reload compared to i3wm for some reason), but that's only because the Sway community has done a lot of hard work to re-implement everything that the i3 community needed/wanted (or provide hacks/scripts to do the same). KDE+Wayland is not nearly as nice an experience.</p><p>So... uhh.. Wayland is THE WAVE OF THE FUTURE, but just as we have been suspecting for the past decade, the future kinda <em>sucks</em>. :P</p>
