In other words, Generative AI and LLMs lack a sound epistemology and that's very problematic...:

"Bullshit and generative AI are not the same. They are similar, however, in the sense that both mix true, false, and ambiguous statements in ways that make it difficult or impossible to distinguish which is which. ChatGPT has been designed to sound convincing, whether right or wrong. As such, current AI is more about rhetoric and persuasiveness than about truth. Current AI is therefore closer to bullshit than it is to truth. This is a problem because it means that AI will produce faulty and ignorant results, even if unintentionally.
(...)
Judging by the available evidence, current AI – which is generative AI based on large language models – entails artificial ignorance more than artificial intelligence. That needs to change for AI to become a trusted and effective tool in science, technology, policy, and management. AI needs criteria for what truth is and what gets to count as truth. It is not enough to sound right, like current AI does. You need to be right. And to be right, you need to know the truth about things, like AI does not. This is a core problem with today's AI: it is surprisingly bad at distinguishing between truth and untruth – exactly like bullshit – producing artificial ignorance as much as artificial intelligence with little ability to discriminate between the two.
(...)
Nevertheless, the perhaps most fundamental question we can ask of AI is that if it succeeds in getting better than humans, as already happens in some areas, like playing AlphaZero, would that represent the advancement of knowledge, even when humans do not understand how the AI works, which is typical? Or would it represent knowledge receding from humans? If the latter, is that desirable and can we afford it?"

A CULT OF IGNORANCE
ISAAC ASIMOV/MY TURN

It’s hard to quarrel with that ancient justification of the free press: “America’s right to know.” It seems almost cruel to ask, ingenuously, “America’s right to know what, please? Science? Mathematics? Economics? Foreign languages?”

None of those things, of course. In fact, one might well suppose that the popular feeling is that Americans are a lot better off without any of that tripe.

There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there always has been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that “my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.”

Apropos to illiteracy in America, the late great Isaac Asimov's essay A Cult of Ignorance is worth reading! It's the source of the famous quote that

There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there always has been. "#AntiVaxx Mom Whose Daughter Died From #Measles Says Disease 'Wasn't That Bad'"

This is the weight of prideful #ignorance

People for whom the death of their child is not as painful as saying "I was wrong" or "I didn't know" or "I'm sorry"

It is weighing on society as well

This will be the death of us

agreed. in this regard, #socialMedia can be a force multiplier for good as well as what it is now: a force multiplier for #bigotry and #plutocracy

but that makes our communities a target

so we need something like #mastodon where we can squash the #trolls without the "fReEzEpEaCh!" #bigoted morons and #centralized #corporate social media indifference or tacit support for #ignorance and #hate

we need the #fediverse to grow

@rhodriplewiskc

the problem is not that a demented #plutocrat should be full of #hate and stupidity. that's almost a given

the tragedy, which we really need to get a handle on, is why his moronic #bigotry and #ignorance appeals to so many

"lol! #bigotry is new to you?"

no it's not new. but how it is goosed on #socialMedia for power so brazenly in cahoots with #plutocracy is a new and terrible wrinkle

yes, the #bigot-plutocrat #political axis is also not new

but it is supercharged now

I am sure this is not peak decadence, but they are working towards it.

My suggestion - an English (yes) Kent strawberry - or better still a bowl of them picked at the right time of the year. Other British berries are available. Worth the wait and a lot of less expensive.

the #conservative mind operates on #fear

overactive amygdala

it crowds out the prefrontal cortex: reason

#plutocrat #rightWing #media and #socialMedia amplifies the imbalance on purpose

pushing lies that goose the fear, #ignorance and #hate, capturing their minds, addicting them, controlling them

as suitably brainwashed zombies, programmed like robots, they dutifully and enthusiastically go to #vote

while the #left is not so engaged

this is our problem
