Hey, guys!

A quick update on my job search: no job still. Interviewed with a software and analytics company 2 weeks ago for a remote position. And despite completing the task I was given in 3 days, I was still turned down.

I have sent out a truckload of applications along with my resume, but nothing is happening still. I am remaining positive, though, and will keep hoping for the best.

I'm applying for a job at a college. The application process requires a cover letter that is to be uploaded. There's no indication of who is running the search - no mention of a search committee chair or hiring manager. However, I know the name of the library director.

To whom should I address the cover letter?

Should I use the name of the department chair?

Or should I use something generic -

"To whom it may concern"

"Dear hiring manager"

"Dear search committee members"

"Greetings fellow librarians"

Well, I managed to convince my employer to give me a raise, but it’s below what I wanted...so I’ll take the raise and keep job hunting.

They basically said that if I find something else they can revisit my salary. But the more I think about that statement, they’re basically saying they are unwilling to pay me more unless under duress. 🤔

Hello #Massachusetts peeps!
Note that on July 31, 2024, Governor Maura Healey signed a law requiring salary ranges to be included in job postings for Massachusetts jobs by companies with more than 25 employees.
If you are on the employer side, please ensure that your job postings comply with the law.
If you are on the #jobHunting side, please consider asking employers whose job postings do not include a salary range to add it, and reporting them to the Attorney General's office if they refuse.

strange question, maybe: I usually do
not contact people about jobs once I've applied to them because I don't wanna bug them or make a bad impression. But, you know, maybe I'm doing that wrong? I applied to a couple low level computational biologist positions (I'm a comp chem kid who did protein work) that I seem to hit all the qualifications for. The job postings actually mention the PI for the group that the position is in!

Would it be a faux pas to just... out and out email them? And if I did, what would I say? "HEY WHAT'S UP I JUST WANNA LET YOU KNOW I APPLIED TO YOUR JOB POSTING AND ALSO I'M A SUPER FUCKING COOL LADY"?

Does anyone have any tips or experience about how to discuss non-professional coding projects? I've been doing a lot of project side work in #rust over the last few months that has absolutely improved my capacity to program with it to where I'd feel comfortable working on it in a professional context. However, I don't have a published project or crate in it or anything so I don't necessarily want to link the project without having some idea of whether that's a good idea or not.

Otherwise I just have "Rust" on my CV but no specific Rust projects (there's examples of the other languages I can program in there).

Thank you! Boosts totally okay and appreciated.

I had a job interview yesterday afternoon and on the job description that was posted by the company it said "Full-time employee" in several different places.

When I did the interview yesterday, the person I interviewed with wanted to go over a few things just to make sure we were all on the same page. First thing he says is, "this is a contracted position for 20 - 30 hours."

oh yeah and this is a long shot, but if anyone's got a lead on someone wanting to hire tech support folks with actual experience in the field, i'm sitting on 10 years of it, and wading through piles of garbage on jobhunting sites. i can work as a contractor, remotely, and while half of my experience is with game servers, i've worked in a diverse set of environments (including a nuclear power plant), cultures (corporate or otherwise), in three languages.

i'm good at what i do, especially the "break stuff down to laypeople" part, but not at all good at the "hunt" part of job hunting. you don't do this kind of job for this long unless you love doing it, or you're
good at it, and i'm both. i'm a catch, really.
