Paul Waldman talks with Rabbi Yael Ridberg about what's at the heart of the Passover narrative:

"Just when we think there's no hope, holidays like Passover are meant to remind us that in the words of Michael Walzer, wherever you live, it's probably Egypt. This is in his book, Exodus and Revolution. Wherever you live, it's probably Egypt and there's probably some promised land that you want to get to, whatever it is."

~ Yael Ridberg

Jeudi 10... [405 chars]

The #Ukrainian city of #Bakhmut was founded in the 16th century, was once a fortress, was active in salt mining, survived the plague in the 18th century, built factories in the 19th century, survived World War I and World War II, and developed in the 21st century.

Today, only #ruins remain of Bakhmut; the city is #dead.
#putin's propagandists describe the interruption of the city's five-hundred-year history and its destruction as "#liberation."

Throwback Thursday!

In 1944, the Office of Strategic Services (predecessor to the CIA) put out this sabotage manual for civilians living in Europe under Nazi occupation. This manual was only de-classified in 2008.

It's an important piece of anti-fascist history, offering a fascinating look at what everyday, average citizens were being asked to do to resist fascist rule and work towards liberation.

Today in Labor History February 24, 1895: Revolution broke out in Baire, near Santiago de Cuba. This was the beginning of the Cuban War of Independence (1895-1898). The liberation war ended with the Spanish-American War and the U.S. taking Cuba as a colony. Some of the more well-known commanders of the Cuban revolution were the poet Jose Marti (composer of “Guantanamera”) and Afro-Cuban Antonio Maceo, the Titan of Bronze.

After 49 years as a political #prisoner, Leonard #Peltier is out, but not free. The Native American activist, persecuted by the US state.

In 1977, Peltier was wrongfully convicted of aiding and abetting the killing of two FBI agents in Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, South Dakota. The evidence used to convict Peltier was very controversial, and his trial was ripe with irregularities. Many believe his imprisonment is retribution for his leadership in the Native American #liberation movement.

"What happens when we put love and intimacy at the center of our understanding of privacy, and what are the consequences of their disavowal, in favor of a more familiar technocratic definition of privacy-as-absense? What role does our deep desire for love and belonging, and our concomitant fear of shame and rejection, have to do with the (mis)direction of tech capital and the current, warped shape of the tech industry and its products?"

Today in Labor History February 8, 1962: French National Police opened fire on a large demonstration in the Charonne massacre. Supporters of Algerian liberation and unionists were protesting the OAS, a right-wing paramilitary fighting against Algerian liberation fighters. 9 people died, all members of the CGT union. This came in the wake of the October, 1961 massacre, when French National Police, under orders from Nazi collaborator, Maurice Papon, opened fire on 30,000 supporters of Algerian independence. The French government acknowledged that they killed 50 people. However, some historians believe that 200-300 Algerians died. In 1998, the authorities convicted Papon of Crimes Against Humanity for his collaboration with the Vichy government. During the trial, they established that the 1961 massacre was deliberate. The graffiti in the image reads: Here we drown Algerians.
