S'mores are a staple of North American childhoods (and there are more than a few grownups who'll pop a marshmallow on a skewer every once in a while). Here, @NationalGeographic takes a look at their real history, which dates back to 1923, and a British Girl Guide leader with a ridiculously appropriate nickname.

"Is it time to ditch your emotional support hoodie?" Boutayna Chokrane writes for @WIRED. Her piece examines how what we wear can affect how others perceive us in the workplace, and consequently, our opportunities. "The hoodie masquerades as an everyman’s garment, but in the office, it’s a rich man’s privilege. For the rest of us, it just makes it easier to be overlooked," she concludes. We want to know: Do you have different wardrobes for work and home? Tell us in the comments what you think.

In Dublin's Fair City, some tourists are finding the statue of Molly Malone so pretty that stewards have been hired to protect the famous fishmonger's décolletage. Tourists seem to think rubbing the bronze figure's thrupenny bits will bring them good luck (a legend that dates back to the ancient times of 2012, when a tour guide made up the story). Now, the protective covering has begun to wear away from the bronze, and hiring bodyguards will be cheaper than raising the height of the plinth on which Molly stands. "Molly means a lot to a lot of people. We always use Molly Malone as our anthem, as our slogan, as our story. So she represents all of those things," Dublin City Historian in Residence Catherine Scuffil told RTE News. "A woman, independent means, her own trade, working in the city, you know, we should respect her a bit more."

It's past midday just about everywhere in the world, which means April Fools is dead and gone. @npr takes a look at the mysterious origins of the "hilarious" pranking day. We want to know: What's your attitude to April 1 jokes (choose as many as you like)?

And finally, new data from Nameberry says people in red states are giving their kids the classic Jewish name Cohen (sometimes with the spelling Kohen). Our @CultureDesk featured this Forward story by Benyamin Cohen and Mira Fox, who are trying to figure out why. Theories include that people are naming their children after the directing duo the Coen brothers, or that it’s a co-opting by Christians of Jewish traditions. Says Benyamin: “I think it’s clever to give pets human names. We have chickens and each one is named after an NPR broadcaster. We have Terry Gross, Yuki Noguchi, Nina Totenberg and so on. We’re actually on our third Melissa Block. The first two, alas, are in chicken heaven now.” Mira replies: “And they all, of course, have your last name.” Benyamin: “Yes, yes. We call them the Co-Hens. I wonder what Nameberry would think of that.”

The name Kohen (or Cohen) is skyrocketing in popularity, but only in red states, while Mira is all over blue states. What's driving the popularity of these traditionally Jewish names? Forward's Benyamin Cohen and Mira Fox have thoughts. Mira: "Does Cohen mean anything else, besides being a priest?" Benyamin: "Sure, it means, 'Hi, I’m a Jew.'"

6,000 homes were destroyed in Altadena, L.A. County, by the recent wildfires. In many cases, all that remains standing is the chimney and fireplace — often covered in tiles designed by artist Ernest Batchelder. @Dwell writes about a grassroots movement to salvage some of those tiles — and the history of the storied neighborhood. "Whether you’re grieving a person or, in this case, a house filled with memories, it helps to have something that you can physically hang on to," says Brenda Davidge. "Having the tile helps us with moving forward because while we know the house and everything that was in it is gone, the tiles are a physical reminder that the fire didn’t take everything, that these things have lasted a hundred-plus years and made it through that crazy fire so they can keep going beyond that too."

Last of all, given the fraught situation between the U.S. and Canadian governments, our @CultureDesk shared an explanation of the term “elbows up” by MP Charlie Angus. For an extra treat, here’s a video to inspire Canadians through the weekend and beyond: Joe Canada/Jeff Douglas’s updated “I am Canadian” ad, but this time it’s not for beer.
