A few days ago, in the comment section of another post, I maligned the Golden Gate Bridge... saying it was so over-photographed that it had become completely banal and uninspiring to me.

Well that's still true. *chuckles*

But that doesn't mean I won't post the picture of the bridge every now and then. Because when you're a San Franciscan, you are required to take photos of the Golden Gate Bridge at least once a year.

It's the law.

A 30 second night-time exposure of the Golden Gate Bridge, taken from an overlook on the San Francisco side. The two towers glow orangey red, uplit from below. Light trails from traffic stream across the bridge. The overcast sky above and the water below are blue-gray... And the rest of the photo, taken on a dreary night, his colorless. Yes, I was freezing my ass off out there. So don't expect many more photos like this.

Right idea, wrong lens.

I usually like shooting with the Sigma 8-16mm ultrawide rectilinear lens. It distorts things in interesting ways, exaggerating distances and making close objects loom large. It also sends lines near the edges flying in strange directions... i.e. buildings tend to lean in and, if the buildings are tall, the buildings will lean backwards.

In this case, I appreciated being able to cover a wide field of view. However, the Palace of Fine Arts looks like it's being sucked into a black hole in the center of the picture

Add: This was a 15 second exposure, taken during the blue hour. 8mm.

A night-time view of the classical, almost Greek, pavilion and colonnades on the northern edge of San Francisco. The surviving buildings from a 1915 Pan Pacific Exhibition glow in amber light, set against a ridiculously royal blue sky. A pond in the foreground reflects some of the sky and lights. As for the distortion, the pavilion and columns lean in towards the center of the picture. The first thing you think when looking at this picture is hmmmm that ain't right. And truly, that ain't right.

I have managed to keep my new years resolution to cut my caffeine consumption to half. I now drink coffee 3-4 cups a week instead of 7-10. I don't like drinking coffee every day because I can feel the caffeine tolerance go up quite quickly and I hate feeling tired from the low key withdrawal. I'm now way less tired as baseline and I can feel the energizing effects of coffee better.

Many people who have trouble waking up in the morning are long time coffee drinkers. If you are addicted to caffeine you will have some level of withdrawal tiredness when you wake up which is why you might not be able to function before the delicious morning coffee. Of course some people are naturally more energetic towards the evening and more tired in the morning (I'm the opposite) but heavy caffeine use can definitely make mornings more tough.
