The wedge-like design bore a family resemblance to that of its contemporary, the mid-engined Esprit, but it had a conventional front-engine/rear-drive layout. Like the recently featured Lotus Cortinas, this used Lotus’ Ford-derived twin-cam engine. The +2 was a 2+2 four-seater, quite different to the standard Elan - perhaps working with Ford on Cortina saloons gave Lotus the idea of doing its own car with a pair of extra seats. David WilkinsMeet the Ford Cortina Lotus Mk2 (1967), successor to the Mk1 model I posted yesterday. The Mk2 mostly followed the same wildly successful formula as the Mk1, although the Lotus element was perhaps slightly diluted - the Mk2 was built at Dagenham alongside standard Cortinas, rather than going to Lotus for conversion, and the special Lotus rear suspension had already been dropped from later Mk1s. David WilkinsToday, we’re back in the 1960s with Lotus. This is the Mk1 version of the Ford Cortina Lotus (usually referred to as the Lotus Cortina), seen here at last year’s NEC Classic Car Show. The Mk1 was introduced in 1963. The Lotus treatment included a special twin-cam version of the Ford Kent engine, bodywork strengthening and a more sophisticated suspension set-up than the standard Ford Cortina. Something of a legend. David WilkinsYesterday I posted a pre-Geely Volvo, the first-generation S80. Today, we’re looking at a pre-Geely Lotus, the original Europa, first launched in the sixties. I saw this 1969 S2 model at the NEC Classic Car Show last year. David WilkinsToday we’re sticking with Lotus but returning to the theme of a few days ago: British EVs. Well I say British, but this, the Lotus Eletre electric SUV, is actually built in China. Handsome but heavy - partly because it carries an enormous 112 kWh battery pack. The weight is offset by 610 PS of power. That’s on the base version. The R model has a staggering 918 PS. Snapped at the SMMT’s Northern test day last year. White or green? David WilkinsToday, another mention for <a href="https://mastodon.social/@icemanfr75" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@icemanfr75</a> who pointed out that the designer of the Lightning GT I featured a week ago (Daniel Durrant, if I am interpreting Wikipedia correctly) was also responsible for the Lotus Emira, launched in 2021.
