@lmorchard I am running #meshtastic at home, with about a dozen other nodes reachable at any time from my location. It has been some fun as well to take a mobile node on my bicycle and try to find other nodes.

Mesh networks are fun (they remind me of Usenet in many ways) and if you are successful building them you learn the limits of flooding algorithms by first-hand experience.

I have one of these store.rokland.com/products/wis and I am looking forward to getting some kind of MQTT gateway next.

@gmc

#LoRa is just the radio/modulation and not actually a protocal stack ...

#LoRaWAN is an open protocol stack

#Meshtastic is not using the LoRaWAN stack

I guess all radio chips include intellectual property of the manufacturer. The only way out would be using SDRs, but that's really overkill ...

For your battery powered sensors in 1-2 km distance I suppose LoRaWAN is the best solution ...

@joe @shadownetworks I use a WisBlock Meshtastic Starter Kit and added a cheap solar panel that plugs into the USB port on the board (not the solar input) and it works well as an outdoor up high solar powered node. (Though I do need to add more height one of these days!)

I should probably write up a full blog post.

My wife who was normally at best tolerant of my tinkering with radios asked me about #meshtastic yesterday. Apparently she's becoming more interested in #shtf options for communications, and we spent some time talking about the radios I have and how they could be used in emergencies. I'm pondering writing up an overview/beginner guide to types of radio and how they can be used. Does anyone have a reference they like? Would people be interested?

The #DEFCON #MeshTastic MQTT server is in early testing. Soon we will open it up for beta testing and will be asking for people to help, then we will do our full reveal of our plans!

A lot of great community support and organizing in the background we will talk about when ready.

Has anyone played with low cost #meshtastic balloons?

It seems like in prolonged power outage, you could throw up a few balloon repeaters and connect regional areas very quickly.

I wonder if this helikite would have enough lift to support one of these radios.

Throw the radio in a waterproof bag and you've got at least a few weeks of retrans.

Probably want a bright red LED blinker for low altitude aircraft to see as well.

fun #meshtastic story: today i lost my SenseCap Card Tracker! i had put it on top of a doorframe on the second floor to get better range, but when i came back at lunch, it wasn't there! i looked around on the floor, couldn't find it... but my phone could reach it over bluetooth, so it was still around somewhere! so i setup the sensors <wiki.seeedstudio.com/sensecap_> and started sending "ping" which were now making the thing "buzz" every time it received a message. i could hear it! it wasn't on the second floor though... after about 2 minutes and 10 "ping" messages sent from another device (a t-deck plus), i found it! it had fallen two floors down, in the basement stairwell, and here it was ringing... phew! seems like it survived the fall too... amazing little device, and #meshtastic success!

dear #meshtastic, what's a cheap, tiny device you'd recommend to give away to friends and people during a training? i have like 100-300$ for 5-20 devices. considering the heltec v3 (but it needs a battery) and the RAK19003 mini (but it needs a battery, a case, screws, omg)... i already have a T-Deck+ and a T-1000E, those are too costly
