As the book went on about the latest plant science, I found myself thinking about all I've learned recently regarding the human gut microbiome, and how similar this stuff about roots was sounding to that. And then, sure enough, Zoe Schlanger explicitly made those connections in her book. All complex organisms are themselves compicated ecologies.
