A Mastodon bot account at mastodon.social scans the fediverse, scrapes selected web pages shared there, rewrites them with AI, posts them to its own site, and shares on Mastodon as tech news the rewritten AI slop. The bot scraped a post of mine (including the attached image) within minutes of my federated blog publishing it.

Is it worth flagging the bot and reporting it to its instance? Are the mods likely to take action?

#discord IS LITERALLY THE PROBLEM!

I'm shure fecking #dread has better moderation and I'd rather use #MicrosoftTeams + #Slack cuz those at least have proper #moderation tools.

  • And I'd rather subscribe to the #LKML and see my inbox getting hosed than using any shitty #SaaS!

Case in point: I'd rather #SelfHost all my comms infrastructure than to ever use something like Discord or any other #GDPR-violating SaaS that is just enshittification.

I'd rather recommend people to instead choose a tool that does everything but horrible to go with multiple smaller & good tools

Check @alternativeto and @european_alternatives for options.

I accept that instance admins must moderate: trolls, bots, repeat offenders, etc.

But for a first-time issue, and especially where there's a paid/professional relationship, there should be basic expectations:

- Warning
- Clear explanation
- Temporary suspension or post deletion
- Response to appeal

Moderation shouldn’t default to exile with no discussion.

Effective moderation of social media to curb genocidal content

"The 2020-2022 Tigray war is reported to be the deadliest armed conflict of the 21𝑠𝑡 century, with an estimated 600 to 800,000 documented deaths and more than 100 thousand victims of rape as a weapon of war. Social media platforms were instrumental in spreading genocidal content during the conflict, and failure to effectively moderate hateful content resulted in the murder of civilians. This work investigates the expertise and processes required to effectively moderate such genocidal content, and compares these findings to the expertise and processes prioritized by social media platforms."

@DAIR's page has a 10-minute video and a link to the CHI paper, and a statement - which I'll include excerpts from in a reply.

I found these rules in a public group chat.

Kirby's Rules of Moderation:

1. Stay Neutral - Moderators should act fairly and avoid personal bias.

2. Transparency Matters - Decisions should be clear and explainable.

3. Rules Before Power - Enforce guidelines, not personal opinions.

4. Context Is Key - Consider intent before taking action.

5. Encourage Discussion - Promote healthy conversations, not silencing.

I just had a post reported by "mastodon.online"

Which is odd because that is a domain, not a user, and there is nothing wrong with the post at all.

What is going on? Is this some new kind of spam?

@aubreyjones, I'm obviously going to dismiss this but can anyone tell me why there isn't a user who made this report? Why is it just the domain? It feels very OFF.

How can this happen? Sometimes, accounts want to follow me that are completely empty, no posts, no communication (even not on their instance). But they have crazily many followers in a very short time. A new scam? Superfamous people under idiotic aliases? 22 K followers - most of them with 0 followers ! for a guy with an idiotic alias and a fake profile photo.

Okay, I want to take a moment to talk about toot-shaming behavior on Fedi. But first, I want to thank the person who blocked me for introducing me to the term "pornado"—I will cherish it.

So, there's a kind of reply-person on Fedi who seems to like to *vocally* use moderation tools. It's not enough to block or report someone, they have to loudly announce it, to rub it in. It's a "fuck you *slams door*" kind of response.

I typed out a paragraph defending my OP, but you can see for yourself, it's linked below.

While discussing where to take this post, my girlfriend pointed out that the behavior whiffs of the same thing I was talking about in my "doubt caltrops" post. It's a way of policing behavior that isn't against any rules, but that *they* find personally objectionable.

Just filter/block/report as necessary and move the fuck on.
