No RFK Jr. There's no autism epidemic in the US or anywhere. There is just more diagnosis, acceptance & understanding, & this is way it should be. It's dangerous to dehumanise neurodivergence, rather than accept that brains are often wired differently.

Here’s a specific question:

A friend has an autistic son about age 11. One of his special interests is building his own computers from parts. But he’s just hit the upper limit of what he can figure out on his own.

Where would you look for support? Ideally like a computer hobbyist / maker / nerd who could consult with this child and help him along? Like a build-your-own-PC tutor?

Back in the day there were “computer clubs” like the famous Homebrew Computer Club. I’m not even sure if groups like that exist anymore. 🤷‍♂️

Thank you!

@hzulla @Fuchskind And that #blind kid who got told "don't do X thing, people will think you're autistic" may have *actuallyautistic@a.gup.pe* been autistic. Not all #blindAutistics necessarily look like the classic autistic look either. Some of us look perfectly normal, and believe me when I say that some of us normal-looking #blind #autistics have spent a *bunch* of energy maintaining that normal appearance because it was expected, but are paying for it now.

The sketch at 14.43.

I think we're supposed to think that Rich is rude and Sam is being treated badly, but I can't see it like that. Rich obviously had a plan to only meet Andy, and Sam is just imposing himself on Rich when he's told no.

I mean Rich could have been more tactful and polite, definitely, but Sam should have just taken no for an answer! Also, I think yes the world would be better if people were more honest!

What do you think?

I only have 64k of RAM. Someone was informed that that was enough for anyone, so that's all I got. That's why I find it so hard to retain and process information.

I need to be able to write to disk to be able to learn. I did get a lot of disk space though!

It's why I did well at school, but I'm really struggling with on the job learning with bike repair. Not enough RAM!

It's why I have such difficulty navigating, because I can remember one turn, and that's it. The next turn will push the first one out my memory. Not enough RAM!

It's probably why I suck with learning faces. Not enough RAM!

I wonder what operating system I run on? SoloOS, maybe. I hope that's not already a Linux distro.

I kind of feel like my output is an LLM. I used to be a SLM until about 2016.

I feel this must be a deeply autistic experience: the disbelief when people actually try to convince you that they didn't mean what they said. And I'm not talking subtext, I'm talking about the grammatical meaning of their verbatim words and sentences.

And then you ask them to clarify and through a convoluted sequence of justifications they end up at "see? And this is why I couldn't possibly have meant this!".

Like wat? Why did you say/write it then in the first place? So fucking confusing. But maybe the explanation really is that autistic people choose their words much more carefully. It's certainly our lived experience.
