@neil rarely have I been so disappointed with my country. As this government veers closer to outright authoritarianism (digital ID cards, support of a genocide, attacks on trans rights), this law will empower them further.
I hope one day the people responsible for this face a human rights court. That’s the politicians that ignored human rights to win popularity from newspapers. That’s civil servants at Ofcom that “just followed orders” to enable it. It won’t happen, because there’s no fairness in this world. But it should. #OnlineSafetyAct
> We have been forced to geo-block access from the United Kingdom to the lgbtqia.space services and community.
> This action is a direct result of the UK's Orwellian "Online Safety Act" a piece of legislation that, despite its name, is incredibly dangerous to online privacy and makes the internet absolutely not safe for marginalized communities and the volunteers who run services like this one.
This isn't new, but I saw it again this morning, and it made me sad.
https://www.theverge.com/news/792032/discord-customer-service-data-breach-hack Oh look, it's exactly what everyone said would happen with the #OnlineSafetyAct.
the UK's #OnlineSurveillanceAct really made a lot of people mad.
now they're going to make digital ID and social credit scores mandatory too
Yes yes, I know it's actually called the #OnlineSafetyAct but it's not about protecting anything.

@neil you may have had a bunch of messages saying this already... but it looks like #imgur geoblocked the UK today, presumably over #OnlineSafetyAct I've mainly seen it used for image sharing in other fora like reddit and dreamwidth. Checking from "outside the uk" confirms it's the UK not Europe being blocked. Largest site I've seen take action like this.
It's either "to protect our kids" or "those scary Forrins" and then our rights are taken away and everyone wonders how it all happened so quickly.
Do you trust this, or ANY government to run this scheme responsibly and safely and without Prejudice?
The 'discrimination and exclusion' will please the racists, but what of the rest of us?
Fuck off you fash cunt and your clown army of incompetent fucks

Oh FFS! Do politicians not understand anything? While the #OnlineSafetyAct is busy f**king up the internet in the name of #SaveTheChildren , the same government is giving instructions on how to evade such surveillance for anyone who has something worth hiding.

@MattTurmaine Ah, perhaps you might have an answer to this question! The server you're using right now, like most of Fediverse, allows pornography and has no form of age verification. Does it have a "significant number" of UK users, for purposes of the #OnlineSafetyAct? We've been trying to get Ofcom to offer guidance on which, if any, Fediverse instances are now illegal in the UK, and they keep declining to say.
Social media was once positioned as the great connecting force that would improve our world. If it ever did that, it certainly isn’t now.
We must rein in these platforms, and deceptive narratives aimed at stopped regulation isn’t helping. Age restrictions are an experiment worth trying.

We wouldn't let a child get behind the wheel of a car and drive down the street, we wouldn't let a child go into an off licence and buy booze. The #OnlineSafetyAct affords protections to children in the virtual world, just as we expect them to be in the physical world.
The next stage of the UK’s slide into digital authoritarianism involves restricting anyone from commenting or reacting to any under 18s live stream. So much for any teenage game or YouTube streamer! #onlinesafetyact #Streaming https://www.ofcom.org.uk/online-safety/illegal-and-harmful-content/online-safety-additional-safety-measures

Welcome to the age verification era!
Here's why you should be concerned
Risks your privacy & security
Threatens anonymity & freedom of speech
It's often ineffective

The complaint form Ofcom says you should use to report websites for violations of the #OnlineSafetyAct does not allow you to enter URLs, because it might be illegal for Ofcom to look at them.
What is going ON over there.
At the moment, because of the #OnlineSafetyAct, I've had to block UK users from hearing the audio. So if you go to a page like this: https://www.girlonthenet.com/blog/kissing-at-the-speed-of-consent/ and click 'play', and you're browsing from a UK IP address, Cloudflare blocks you from hearing the audio.
It basically spits out a 403 error, and the play button doesn't work. This is good for compliance with the law, but SHIT for users who probably just assume my website is broken.
