Secret #Pentagon memo on #China, #HomelandSecurity has #HeritageFoundation fingerprints

An internal guidance memo from #Defense Secy #PeteHegseth focuses on deterring China’s seizure of #Taiwan & shoring up homeland defense. In some instances, the document is nearly a word-for-word facsimile of a report from the conservative think tank behind #Project2025.

The Washington Post · Secret Pentagon memo on China, homeland has Heritage fingerprintsBy Alex Horton

"A Signal spokesman said the Pentagon memo is not about the messaging app's level of security, but rather that users of the service should be aware of what are known as "phishing attacks." That's when hackers try to gain access to sensitive information through impersonation or other deceptive tricks.

"Once we learned that Signal users were being targeted and how they were being targeted, we introduced additional safeguards and in-app warnings to help protect people from falling victim to phishing attacks. This work was completed months ago," said Signal spokesman Jun Harada.

The March 18, 2025, Pentagon memo adds, "Please note: third party messaging apps (e.g. Signal) are permitted by policy for unclassified accountability/recall exercises but are NOT approved to process or store nonpublic unclassified information.""

“We intentionally don’t share plans w/people who don’t need to know,” said one #Navy F/A18 pilot, who has flown frequently in missions in the Middle East. “You don’t share what time we’re supposed to show up over a target. You don’t want to telegraph that we’re about to show up on someone’s doorstep; that’s putting your crew at risk.” He & several other current & fmr pilots spoke on the condition of anonymity to avoid reprisals from the #Pentagon & from #Trump allies.

Worse, they said, is that…they can no longer be certain the #Pentagon is focused on their safety when they strap into cockpits.

“The whole point about aviation safety is that you have to have the humility to understand that you are imperfect…Everybody makes mistakes. But ultimately, if you can’t admit when you’re wrong, you’re going to kill somebody because your ego is too big,”said Lt John Gadzinski, a ret #Navy F14 pilot who flew combat missions from aircraft carriers in the Persian Gulf.
