New study from #CLICCS researcher Jakob Deutloff finds no strong evidence for a tipping point chain reaction from carbon-cycle elements like #permafrost or the #Amazon.
However, 9 of 16 tipping points could still be crossed under current policies.

#Arctic #warming could pose a threat to America’s #security too: #Alaska may have new vulnerabilities to both #China & #Russia; changes in #ocean salinity & temp might interfere w/ #submarine detection systems; extremes of climate change, including #permafrost thaw in Russia, may drive #economic #instability, social #unrest, & territorial claims. [#Trump #Intelligence Agencies excluded #ClimateChange from the annual #ThreatAssessment report for the first time in decades — too *woke*]

Groundwater in the Arctic is delivering more carbon into the ocean than was previously known

A relatively small amount of #groundwater trickling through #Alaska's #tundra is releasing huge quantities of #carbon into the #ocean, where it can contribute to #ClimateChange, according to new research out of The University of Texas at Austin.
As the tundra continues to thaw and the flow of submarine groundwater ratchets up, Demir said that the outflow of carbon from shore to sea could effectively make ocean surface waters a carbon source to the #atmosphere. The #CO2 released via groundwater could also contribute to ocean #acidification.
"The #Arctic coast is changing in front of our eyes," said Bayani Cardenas, a co-author of this study and professor at the Jackson School's Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences. "As #permafrost thaws, it turns into coastal and submarine #aquifers. Even without this thawing, our studies are among the first to directly show the existence of such aquifers."

Melting #permafrost is bad, mmkay.

Iron and sulfite minerals are now leaching into once pristine arctic rivers, acidifying them. One the sulfur acidifies the water it begins to leach toxic compounds and elements into the rivers. It was more commonly seen in rivers where abandoned mines were nearby.

But a new study published Wed in the journal #Nature shows that blowing past #climate goals is more dangerous than it originally seemed. Even if temperatures come back down to 1.5°C, the authors found, many climate impacts — like rising #SeaLevels & thawing #permafrost — will persist for centuries to millennia.

Abrupt increase in Arctic-Subarctic wildfires caused by future #permafrostthaw

,"... we find that projected rapid #permafrost thaw leads to massive #soil drying, surface warming, and reduction of relative humidity over the #Arctic-Subarctic region. These combined processes lead to nonlinear late-21st-century regime shifts in the coupled soil-hydrology system and rapid intensification of #wildfires in western #Siberia and #Canada."

"A study, published by an international team of climate scientists and permafrost experts shows that, according to new climate computer model simulations, global warming will accelerate #permafrost thawing and as a result lead to an abrupt intensification of #wildfires in the Subarctic and Arctic regions of northern Canada and Siberia."

Acceleration of #climatechange is taking place due to our failure to cut increasing CO2 emissions.

Any impact of Arctic coastal #permafrost erosion on the global #climate through increasing atmospheric CO2 concentrations until 2100 is comparatively small.

Yet, this new #EarthSystemModel component allows for a better quantification of the carbon budget, necessary for carbon monitoring under #decarbonisation .

www.uni-hamburg.deIn years to come, the Arctic Ocean will absorb less CO2 than expected

In a #newpaper from my group, led by David Nielsen, we incorporated coastal permafrost as a new component of an #EarthSystemModel.

This allowed us to quantify that #coastal #permafrost erosion weakens the Arctic Ocean #CO2 uptake from the atmosphere by 7-14%.

This exerts a positive biogeochemical feedback on #climate, increasing atmospheric CO2 by 1–2 TgC yr−1 per °C of increase in global surface air temperature.
