#idw A recent study by the RPTU University Kaiserslautern-Landau shows extensive #pesticide contamination in the landscape of the Upper Rhine Region. The research team led by Carsten Brühl shows for the first time that synthetic chemical pesticides from conventional #agriculture do not remain on the cultivated areas, but spread from the lowlands to the Black Forest and the Palatinate Forest.

EPA’s proposal would ban chlorpyrifos residue on 70 food crops, while allowing it on 11 others, specifically alfalfa, apple, asparagus, tart cherry, citrus, cotton, peach, soybean, strawberry, sugar beet, and spring and winter wheat.

Rice, farmed conventionally, is not very sustainable as the flooding of rice fields creates anaerobic conditions in the soil, resulting in methane emissions. Methane from rice cultivation contributes to 12% of global annual emissions and has a high global warming potential. Moreover, increasing demand for rice drives deforestation as more land is cleared for rice cultivation – further exacerbating climate change. Rice farming also puts pressure on water resources, particularly in regions facing water scarcity.

Years ago I submitted a FOIA request for EPA emails relating to the Spartan Mosquito Pro Tech (a tube filled with water, sucrose, yeast, & boric acid). I was interested in how the device managed to secure an EPA registration even though it doesn't kill mosquitoes. I now have the documents and they confirm that (1) EPA scientists knew the device didn't work but (2) political pressure was sufficient to bury those concerns. #EPA #pesticide #FOIA #SpartanMosquito #mississippi

RANT: Drives me nuts when pesticide companies and government agencies tell the public that their ultra-low volume (ULV) pesticide applications "target" mosquitoes, magically sparing other insects such as butterflies and fireflies. The reality is that the tiny droplets of pesticides are not laser-guided and thus will land on *all* the insects in an area. And the organophosphates and pyrethroids used in ULV sprays are broadly toxic to arthropods. Aside from providing the EPA with fraudulent data in support of a pesticide registration application (that's a crime for which one can get jail time, fyi), Spartan Mosquito *withheld* critical data: evidence that the CO2 produced by the tubes is far below the level needed to attract mosquitoes. I.e., the tubes have ZERO efficacy because mosquitoes don't even go near the tubes. I've alerted the EPA but they apparently don't care. I'm not sure what the next step should be. Just how bad is Spartan Mosquito's efficacy data? Every single experiment lacked proper controls and replication, plus many were clearly designed/rigged in a way to produce the desired outcome. In my opinion, Spartan Mosquito *knowingly* provided misleading and false information to the EPA and state agencies.
