#idw A recent study by the RPTU University Kaiserslautern-Landau shows extensive #pesticide contamination in the landscape of the Upper Rhine Region. The research team led by Carsten Brühl shows for the first time that synthetic chemical pesticides from conventional #agriculture do not remain on the cultivated areas, but spread from the lowlands to the Black Forest and the Palatinate Forest.

Shocking - but not surprising - example of 'regulatory capture' where industry (pesticides and GM crops in this case) does whatever it takes to co-opt the supposed regulating agencies - in this case US Dept of Agriculture and USAid (to capture African markets)

The Guardian · Revealed: the US government-funded ‘private social network’ attacking pesticide criticsBy Carey Gillam

Years ago I submitted a FOIA request for EPA emails relating to the Spartan Mosquito Pro Tech (a tube filled with water, sucrose, yeast, & boric acid). I was interested in how the device managed to secure an EPA registration even though it doesn't kill mosquitoes. I now have the documents and they confirm that (1) EPA scientists knew the device didn't work but (2) political pressure was sufficient to bury those concerns. #EPA #pesticide #FOIA #SpartanMosquito #mississippi

RANT: Drives me nuts when pesticide companies and government agencies tell the public that their ultra-low volume (ULV) pesticide applications "target" mosquitoes, magically sparing other insects such as butterflies and fireflies. The reality is that the tiny droplets of pesticides are not laser-guided and thus will land on *all* the insects in an area. And the organophosphates and pyrethroids used in ULV sprays are broadly toxic to arthropods. Linked article is just one example of what actually happens. #pesticide #mosquitoes #pyrethroids #insects #butterflies #monarch #lepidoptera #pollinators pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/194320

PubMedImpacts of ultra-low volume resmethrin applications on non-target insects - PubMedWe studied the impacts of exposure to ultra-low volume (ULV) applications of resmethrin (Scourge) on monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) larvae and adults. In a series of 3 experiments, we measured short- and long-term survival of monarch larvae and adults, and the impacts of consuming previously e …

Aside from providing the EPA with fraudulent data in support of a pesticide registration application (that's a crime for which one can get jail time, fyi), Spartan Mosquito *withheld* critical data: evidence that the CO2 produced by the tubes is far below the level needed to attract mosquitoes. I.e., the tubes have ZERO efficacy because mosquitoes don't even go near the tubes. I've alerted the EPA but they apparently don't care. I'm not sure what the next step should be. Anyone? #epa #pesticide #fraud #CO2 #CarbonDioxide #SpartanMosquito #mississippi #mosquitoes
