Another arcade puzzle game: "Pipe Dream" — also from 1990.

Unlike Klax, Pipe Dream didn't start in the arcades, it started on the Amiga as "Pipe Mania" in 1989 — programmed by The Assembly Line (UK), with artwork by LucasFilm Games (Mark Ferrari¹).

The arcade version has some very japanese graphics (e.g. those firemen). Not sure if any of those two companies had any involvement with it beyond licensing the rights to Video System.

Pipe Dream (arcade) stage A is (loosely) themed after firemen having to connect a hose to fight a fire. Like it says on the right ("Norm 14"), you have to connect at least 14 pipe sections from "start" to "end" to clear the level.
Pipe Dream (arcade) stage B, themed (even more loosely) after a doctor connecting an IV line. In this instance, I failed the level and the green liquid has spilled. I wonder what kind of drug that green stuff is...
Pipe Dream (arcade) stage C, loosely themed after construction workers building pipelines to bring water to a deserted area. At least, that what the pre-stage splash screen implies because, again, what kind of green water is that? Looks more like toxic waste. Also, why are the background tiles an ocean with some islands? There's even some greenery on the islands... where is the desert?

Arcade puzzle games are often overlooked, so here's "Klax" (1990) from Atari.

Colored blocks roll down a conveyor belt, and you must catch them and drop them in rows, columns, or diagonals. Levels have specific goals, like scoring a certain number of diagonals, or surviving a certain number of blocks.

It's a good game to emulate on mobile, while on a waiting room. Which I guess kind of says why we don't usually think about puzzle games in arcades...

The blocks are rolling down a conveyor belt from the distance. You have a paddle that can hold a certain number of blocks. When you drop a block from the paddle's stack, the top block drops first.
In this level, you have do do a certain number of "Klaxs" (rows, columns, diagonals of the same color) to complete the level. The "drop meter" says you can't fail to catch more than 3 blocks. Of course, as the level goes on, it becomes harder to catch them all, and that's how you lose.

One more.

This one was something else. All pieces are really weird, things drifted apart all the time, it was difficult to fit in new pieces and it was a challenge to find "the next one".

We loved it.

And finished in one afternoon.

Colours are awful, it's much brighter, but it's a struggle between getting them right, having not too much reflection and making the parts visible.

A mostly circular puzzle of a pair with spread out wings. On close inspection is visible that the pieces are weird shapes with spiral interlocking parts and a few of the pieces are the shapes of animals like a cat, an otter, fox, sheep, goat, bird ...

My daughter and I like to #puzzle together when she's home from university. This time it was quite a challenge, seemingly hundreds of pieces with more or less the same colours.

But we did it. And now my back and knees are hurting. I'm too old to sit on the floor for hours.

A finished puzzle of a "lost place". A large staircase - in the center the stairs are leading down, left they are going up, Greek style columns are framing the stairs and above the down leading ones are large windows in a neoclassic style. The wall on the left of the stairs is covered in black comic style graffiti, the wall on the right has color peeling. Light is streaming in through the windows creating stark rays of light. It's a very eerie mood - a once probably very beautiful building falling into complete disrepair.
