A #quantum machine has used entangled qubits to generate a number certified as truly random for the first time, demonstrating a handy function that's physically beyond even the most powerful supercomputer

Researchers from the US 🇺🇸 and UK🇬🇧 repurposed existing quantum supremacy experiments on Quantinuum's 56-qubit computer

The result was a number so random, no amount of physics could have predicted it

Call for Talks and Workshops - Quantum Village 4 @ DEFCON 33!

We're very excited and pleased to announce that out Call for Talks/Workshops for this year's event is now OPEN! At Quantum Village we want to 'Access All Quantum States'; from how to hack quantum networks to how quantum engineering might shift our collective futures. And we want YOU to be a part of this incredible year!

So far we are lining up amazing activities including our Quantum Capture the Flag, quantum art demonstrations, our upcoming hackable Open Source Quantum Device... do you have what it takes to join the Quantum Hacker Elite?

Google DocsCall for Talks/WorkshopsAt Quantum Village we want to 'Access All Quantum States'; from how to hack quantum networks to how quantum engineering might shift our collective futures. We have a plethora of new activities, open to all levels, for hackers to come and learn quantum technologies - workshops, some talks, interactive demonstrations, and real quantum hardware! This year, we are launching our first open source quantum device, and it is designed to be the world's first hackable quantum device! Inspo List: Here are some things we are especially keen to showcase - but this list isn't exclusive! * Quantum Hacking and Security Research. e.g. from Grover's, Shor's, Regev's Algos to Qubit Crosstalk and the threat model for quantum computers * Quantum Networking: e.g. Microwave/Photonic Bridges, photonics experiments, etc. * Modular Quantum Computer Designs * Quantum Computing Hardware Deepdives: Photonics/Neutral Atoms * Open Source Quantum Hardware Projects * Quantum Algorithms Explainer/Intros for the Layman * Quantum Applications in the Wild * Quantum and the Arts... Creative approaches/applications and what quantum culture might look like... * Quantum Sensing and Metrization - how quantum sees the world differently, and is that better? * Policy/Standards/Ethics for Quantum Tech - who controls the quantum future? Talks should be around 45mins, 90mins for workshops if they have an interactive component. For intro talks we like that this is ideally someone with substantial experience or record of teaching - this helps to ensure that n00bs get the best start possible. We are looking to get all of the responses in by mid-May and then quickly turned around! **DISCLAIMER** - Quantum Village and DEF CON are NOT sales conferences, and we will reject without review any talks that look like they are garnered towards selling services outside of the bounds of our remit.

US 🇺🇸 puts export restrictions on 80 companies
The US Commerce Department has added 80 foreign companies to its export restrictions list.
American companies are forbidden from selling products and services on national security grounds

50 of the companies are based in China🇨🇳 , while the rest are based in Taiwan🇹🇼 , Iran🇮🇷 , Pakistan🇵🇰 , South Africa🇿🇦 , and the UAE🇦🇪

The companies are linked to #AI, high-performance computing, and #quantum technologies

Hmm. The referenced preprint doesn''t understand the #quantum uncertainty at all; "zero point energy" is merely a sometimes useful hidden-variable-like approximation, and not a true feature of QM (since it can give wrong answers). You only get randomness falling out of QM once you start adding approximations.

I prefer the Seth Lloyd style of making *operational* judgements about (apparent) #freewill not idealised philosophical ones.

The "quantum cliff" is coming sooner than you think. State secrets, financial information, medical records, private communications—all umasked. Forever.

First accessible by states & corps, then criminals, then everyone.

The #Quantum NanoScience Center in South Korea apparently sponsors an annual art contest with really high-level entries like dance performances and art installations. I learned this today at a session entitled Science Meets Art at the APS Global Summit in Anaheim.
Also, I learned South Korea has the third highest number of private art museums, after the US and Germany.

With the arrival of quantum computers, our data security is at risk, because quantum computers can crack existing encryption in no time.

Quantum key distribution offers a solution. How does this technology work and why is it not yet widely used? Wojciech Kozlowski, Senior Advisor and Lead Quantum Communication at SURF, explains.

#NIST Selects #HQC as Fifth Algorithm for Post #Quantum #Encryption
HQC is the latest algorithm chosen by NIST’s Post-Quantum Cryptography project, which has overseen efforts since 2016 to head off potential threats from #quantumcomputers. HQC will take its place alongside the four algorithms NIST selected previously. Three of those algorithms have been incorporated into finished standards, including #MLKEM, which forms the core of the standard called #FIPS203.

I almost overlooked that I've been on #Mastodon for a full year now. I must say, I was sceptical in the beginning, but I feel that we have been making continuous progress in terms of reach and interesting content, while at the same time not falling for too excessive spam. Keep it up 👍!
Since many scientific institutions have joined in recent months, and with them hopefully many more scientists, it's maybe time for an updated #introduction

I'm a theoretical physicist who works as a postdoc at the Math Institute in Oxford 🐂. My research is about #quantum field theory, with an emphasis on combinatorics. Some aspects are rather "hands on", such as the numerical values and distribution of Feynman integrals, which is input for new numerical methods to compute scattering cross sections. Other aspects of my work are rather mathematical, such as the relationship between topological field theory and the cohomology of the odd graph complex. I have a website that contains a summary of my research and a sporadic blog about my postdoc life and what to do with physics in real life. paulbalduf.com

The Internet could soon become a Quantum Internet. The technologies for this are currently being developed. The first operating system for quantum networks, QNodeOS, is now available. It was developed by an international team with the participation of Tracy Northup's research group at the University of Innsbruck. 👏

Lots of names for this #celestial #spectacle: the #BloodMoon, the #FullMoon, even March's #WormMoon.

Most importantly, #MoonGazers, it's the #TotalLunarEclipse, and what we call the #Night of the #KrononautMoon, the Night when #TimeTravelers are invited to come visit, or send us a #quantum #signal from the #beyond!

The Krononaut Moon Project (@KronoMoon) is collecting Full Moon #photos from the far reaches of the #Fediverse, all Thursday Night & all Friday Night, 2025 Mar 13-14. We love a #MoonShot that includes #people in it (or Time Travelers!) — what we call a "#Moonsie". The Total Lunar Eclipse occurs around 07:00 UTC Friday.

Watch the Moon & #Stars this week, and please note any #anomalous #phenomena (#UFOs or #UAP). Share your #documentation with @KronoMoonPhotos & @KronoMoon, or contact: Photos@KronoMoon.org
