Lemmy as an non-US alternative to Reddit, using people-owned servers

Here's a post that explains what Lemmy is - it's a decentralised link aggregator that's an alternative to Reddit 🇺🇸.

It lists some of the largest Lemmy instances by 🇪🇺 country, as well as an FAQ on how it works.

We've been boosting a bunch of posts from Lemmy instances, since it's based on ActivityPub protocol, so it's interopable with Mastodon.

But we're thinking of joining Lemmy, just to be able to use and test it and form an opinion. The tricky bit is choosing an instance 😅. We care more about a nice and open community to diversity of opinions than if it's in Poland or Finland or any other EU country. (suggestions?)

Are anglophone Canadians in real life as intolerant towards the French-speaking population as they appear to be on #reddit? Even after Trump attacking Québec, there still seems to be lots of hate directed towards #Québec from the rest of #Canada.

I have read a lot about Québec's history and to me their language laws seem justified and reasonable.

Why does it seem to be so difficult for some Canadians to understand that there are languages other than English spoken there? Is it envy?

My partner was one of the ‘lucky’ ones in HHS and sent this out on our family chat:“It was a massacre today at HHS. I survived but many didn’t. I am devastated, we all are reeling from the loss of so many good people we worked with, knew and relied on. We lost entire divisions. We cried and huddled and tried to support each other but with little success. We, as in FDA, will not be able to protect public health. Period. I am sorry.”I’m gutted for EVERYONE who didn’t deserve this and I just want to rage….Edit: realized I made it about her when it needs to be about everyone.

Administration for Children and Families Was Gutted Today - Entire Regions GONE.

Massacre at ACF today. Regions 1,2,5,9, and 10 are gone. Just gone. Entire programs, divisions, and teams eliminated from HQ. ACF serves the most vulnerable children in the country, this is CATASTROPHIC. Media needs to step up and cover this. Children and families WILL suffer.

RIF’d Today. I’m numb………………..

This is surreal. Years of service obliterated by evil people who are absolutely clueless how the government really works. I took a 20K pay cut to work for the government after getting tired of being laid off in the private sector again and again. I don’t know whether to take the severance or retire ugh. I can’t even think straight. I’ll look at all the documents attached to the email I received today, tomorrow. I really wish this was an April fools joke. 😢

I was on a call with appointees on Friday. They're laughing about the layoffs.

One made a crack about the Department of Education having plenty of money now. The second, talking to/about HHS said "Run it by your comms team next week, if you have a comms team next week.". Literally laughing at the destruction they are causing. Fuck these people.

I browse through Reddit occasionally, and it can be interesting. BUT - some 90% of posts in my feed seem to be from people asking questions that they could just search for online. Are these bots, do you think, or is it just the algorithm surfacing morons in order to stir people up?
