Huomasin et heilan olkalaukku oli taas kulunut ja paikkauksen tarpeessa.

Heila sit kysyi että kannattaako sitä paikata jos se on kohta taas rikki.

Se on väärä kysymys, oikea kysymys on; onko se hyvä laukku? käytätkö sitä? haluatko jatkossakin käyttää sitä?

Jos vastaus kyllä niin kannattaa paikata vaikka joutuisi myöhemmin paikkaamaan lisää. #reuse #reduce #repair

Fixed up the roof supports of the firewood store. The old were sitting on soil and rotting away.

Jacked up the roof beam, cut out the rotten old support and pulled it out. Filled the hole with smashed up concrete debris and drilled a hole through a large chunk, hammered a piece of rebar through and left it sticking out to fit into a hole I drilled into the new log. No more rotting.

Then new supports cut, shaped and installed x3.

A lean-to roof extending the side of a barn to store firewood under. Three logs hold up a crossbeam that supports the rafters that hold the roof. There is a fourth log next to the rightmost support, hovering above a plank. This is because a red hydraulic jack is lifting it with the help of a split firewood log screwed to the side of the temporary support. The roof beam is braced sideways with two temporary supports hammered in at angles, stuck into the ground.
A new foundation piece, resting on some concrete debris (and pottery shards for future archeologists). The foundation itself is a large chunk of salvaged concrete with a hole drilled through the center, through which a piece of rebar protrudes about 5 cm upwards (and invisible about half a meter down). The plank holding the temporary support is partially visible next to it.
Same as the first scene, except the old support is gone and a new debarked and straight log in its place, standing on a rot proof concrete support. The temporary support, red hydraulic jack and plank are still in place but no longer support the load of the roof.
The finished three supports, now new and sitting on concrete chunks. Four planks have been fastened at angles to prevent shearing. The ground is scattered with debris from the work and from old bark and firewood. The old roof beam has been debarked as well.

Getting the broken bolt out took ages. Steel in aluminium gets stuck real good. My usual tricks failed and I had to drill it out. At least it wasn't stainless steel. Then some recutting of mangled threads and finding a replacement bolt.

Not done, but meanwhile I threw some phophoric acid on the steel parts.

The same pump as before, now with the parts stripped of paint, burrs filed down, rust brushed/sanded off and slowly turning black from phoshporic acid. The leather seal around the piston is seated correctly again. Everything except the cylinder looks relatively shiny.

Fixing up this diesel hand pump I found in the garage/barn a while ago.

The leather seal around the piston was slipped out of place, but it was fixable - hope it'll stay in place. Apart from that, just one bolt broke and some rust, mostly on the outside, as the fuel inside had preserved it.

The aluminium parts are a really bad sand casting job, but it should hold anyways. May need some metal epoxy putty.

Cleaning up the parts now. Then test before painting.

A fuel hand pump made of steel and aluminium with some chipped of dark green paint on it. It has a crank arm but the handle is missing. There's a curved spout and a rotating drip catcher that can be slotted together when not in use. The bottom has various size threads for screwing into a barrel or other container. The intake tube protrudes out of the bottom. The pump housing is clamped together by four long rods. At the very top is a calibration screw that can be locked with a tamper-evident wire.
The same pump, now taken apart with the parts spread out on a table. Small screws and parts are in a plastic yoghurt cup. The parts not visible before include the piston with a toothed bar (a rack) and a sprocked removed from the lever shaft, revealing a key. The top and bottom fitting are aluminium, nwo with the pipes removed.
The piston, now cleaned up and the leather seal reseated and clamped into place. A spring holds the a flapper plate shut. It's sitting on piece of scrap PVC floor.
The cylinder, inside partially cleaned up, somewhat rusty but mostly just dirty from brushed off rust and debris. The sun reflects on shiny brushed metal.

Gårsdagens reparation var lille men nødvendig: der var løbet en maske på mine vanter. Jeg fandt 20 cm garn fra da de blev strikket, samlede den bortløbne maske op og lappede sammen i toppen, hvor noget garn var knækket.

Nærbillede af tommelfingeren på en hjemmestrikket halvhandske. Den er rustrød/orange. Jeg har den på, så tommelfingeren stikke ud af handskefingeren.

Just had the loveliest experience while getting my watch strap resized at Silver Phoenix in Bray. The long sides are held by bolts in a typical flat pack furniture joint. This is normally fine and strong enough, although ideally there should be a half moon washer/nut instead of just a regular hex nut.

However, the bolts are too long, bottoming out in the hole and forcing the side and leg apart instead of clamping them together.

Fixed with a long drill bit, making room for the tip of the bolt.

Must've come from the CBA furniture factory! :)

The corner of a table support. Square profile leg is glued to the short side with a mortise and tenon. The long side has a bolt through the leg that ends in a pocket with a hex nut barely visible. However, the bolt is already hitting the other side of the hole without even being fully inserted into the leg.

Now the other side. Dry join, you can see where I dug the pins out that obviously couldn't hold a table leg, see elongated holes.

The other two holes below the mortise are from where someone tried to patch it with an angle bracket and screws. That didn't work either.

Ah well, clamped back together with some PU glue.

A mortise and tenon joint. It's roughly made, probably in a factory, there's torn wood on both parts. The tenon has two small holes, the top very elongated from where pins were unable to hold it against the leverage from the table leg. The leg has two rough holes where the pins were dug out. Two small holes below in a diagonal pattern show where a small angle bracket was screwed to. The inside of the mortar and the tip of the tenon have torn wood on them.

Been hanging out on some automotive forums, both to learn and to help with what I know.

Observation: Many car workshops are shockingly, unbelievably incompetent, even official dealers.

Swapping parts, sure. But diagnosing anything? Nope.

Expensive parts get replaced that had nothing wrong with them, the problem is not fixed and after 2-3 attempts the total cost is so high the car is written off and sold for a laughable value.

The early morning radio has the shipping forecast, farming report, and a non-denominational prayer. Today’s was a tale about how we don’t repair stuff any more. The speaker, Richard Reddie, spoke of an old tv he’s kept in his shed…. Just in case someone can fix it. I couldn’t help but think there’s someone on here who could.
