"A U.S.-born American citizen was being detained at the request of immigration authorities Thursday despite an advocate showing his U.S. birth certificate in court and a county judge finding no reason for him to be considered an 'illegal alien' who illegally entered Florida.

"Juan Carlos Lopez-Gomez, 20, was arrested Thursday evening by Florida Highway Patrol and charged under a state immigration law that has been temporarily blocked since early this month. Details of Gomez-Lopez’s arrest and detention were first reported by the Florida Phoenix news site.

"After inspecting his birth certificate, Leon County Judge LaShawn Riggans said during the hearing that 'this is indeed an authentic document,' but that she did not have jurisdiction beyond finding no probable cause for the charge.

"Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s role is to enforce immigration laws that generally apply to noncitizens. American citizens are protected under the Fourth Amendment of the Constitution from unreasonable search and seizure, arrest and detention.

"Nonetheless, he remains detained locally at ICE’s request, said Thomas Kennedy, a spokesperson at the Florida Immigrant Coalition who attended Thursday’s hearing.

" 'Everything tracks for him being sent to an ICE detention center,' he told NBC News in a phone interview.

"NBC News has reached out to state and federal authorities for comment.

"Lopez-Gomez was in a vehicle with other passengers and was traveling to work from Georgia when they were stopped after entering Florida.

:A sweeping immigration law signed by Gov. #RonDeSantis in 2023 makes it a state crime for an undocumented immigrant over age 18 to enter the state illegally."

"You listened to my child and called them by the name they asked you to! You broke the law and I am getting you fired from your job!"

This level of extremist control and power manipulation is incomprehensible. This level of hateful parenting and hatred of your own children and who they are, is incomprehensible.

Knowing that our Premier in Alberta, Danielle Smith, not only praised this legislation in Florida, told us how she "greatly admired" governor Ron DeSantis for his "Don't Say Gay" legislation, then enacted the same sort of legislation in Alberta, is also incomprehensible.

This is what Danielle Smith supports. Extreme authoritarian rule where angry reactionaries can fire public school teachers for simply listening to their kids.

This is unconscionable. We must vote out the UCP and demand that the new government repeal these hateful transphobic, homophobic, anti-queer laws in Alberta.

During the Republican primary campaign, in which she served as #Trump’s online attack dog against Gov #RonDeSantis, Loomer floated the baseless notion than DeSantis’s wife, Casey, had lied about having breast cancer.

But on Wed afternoon, she sat w/Trump in the Oval Office, plying him w/claims about staff whom she insisted he should dismiss.

#Florida’s governor has blundered by saying #Ukraine is not a vital American interest

"PEOPLE SPOUT all sorts of nonsense to get themselves elected. Most of the time it does not matter, because memories fade and circumstances change. This week, however, Ron DeSantis, the governor of Florida and the most plausible challenger to Donald Trump for the Republican presidential nomination, declared that Ukraine is not one of America’s “vital national interests”. He was not only wrong, but his words have done lasting damage to Ukraine, America’s allies and America itself.

Mr DeSantis was not speaking off the cuff, but in a prepared answer to a questionnaire put out by Tucker Carlson, a host on Fox News. Describing the war as a “territorial dispute”, he argued that America should not become further entangled in Ukraine when it faces so many other tasks, including countering China and securing its own borders. Because Mr Trump has also said that he thinks America has been too generous, it is possible that a Republican victory in 2024 would abandon Ukraine to the invading armies of Vladimir Putin."

Hardline #ChristianRight and conservative groups like #AllianceDefendingFreedom and the #HeritageFoundation offer a chillingly similar message arguing that LGBTQ-inclusive school policies and nondiscrimination laws are dangerous, radical “gender ideology.” These groups engage in well-funded, strategic campaigns against recognition of transgender people and broader LGBTQ equality, relying on a range of unfounded scare tactics. Just last month, the Heritage Foundation published a report decrying the Biden administration’s National Strategy for Gender Equity and Equality as a plan to make “gender ideology a central theme in the American experiment.” The report concludes that trans-inclusive healthcare and nondiscrimination policies are a “frontal assault on the freedom to act in accordance with” the need to “defend marriage as the union of one man and one woman, and defend the immutability of biological sex.” This messaging isn’t new, but it has reached a renewed fever pitch in the last few years in American politics."

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has a history of removing elected officials from office or suspending them if they don’t comply with his agenda. It’s only getting worse as President Trump’s immigration crackdown kicks into gear. “This is a governor that looks for any reason to remove people when he can,” state Representative Anna Eskamani, a Democrat, told @bolts “It speaks to a trend of the consolidation of power among the few. It is incredibly unsettling to have that happen to our democracy.”
