Slechts een handvol gerenommeerde studio’s, zoals Rockstar (Grand Theft Auto) en het zelfstandige Valve (Counter-Strike), kunnen het zich veroorloven om zelf te bepalen of ze de verkoopdatum van een spel vertragen of een project helemaal annuleren.<br>Ook Blizzard Entertainment hoorde lange tijd bij dat illustere gezelschap. De maker van belachelijk populaire games als World of Warcraft en Hearthstone hanteerde graag het mantra ‘het is af als het af is’. Gamers vonden het prima als een nieuw deel in een serie zes (Overwatch 2), elf (Diablo IV) of zelfs twaalf jaar (StarCraft II) later verscheen, want ze konden er blind op vertrouwen dat Blizzard kwaliteit boven kwantiteit stelde.<br>2008 was een keerpunt in Blizzards bestaan, tekent de Amerikaanse journalist Jason Schreier op in zijn uitvoerige boek Play Nice, over het miljardenbedrijf dat in 1991 met drie man begon als Silicon &amp; Synapse op de campus van de Universiteit van Californië in Irvine. Na eerst onderdeel te zijn geweest van een firma voor onderwijssoftware en een Frans mediaconglomeraat, werd Blizzard in het jaar van de financiële crisis opgeslokt door uitgever Activision.<br>Onder bewind van de gewiekste bestuurder Bobby Kotick werd de studentikoze aanklootcultuur tot ongenoegen van veel werknemers omgeturnd in een hiërarchische melkkoe die bij voorkeur jaarlijks een nieuwe uitbreiding voor WoW moest uitpoepen. Ooit geliefde merken als Guitar Hero en Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater waren eerder al geofferd voor Koticks zucht naar eindeloze groei.<br>Schreier beschrijft op basis van ruim 350 interviews hoe het personeel zich opwond over ongelijke bonussen, het harteloze interne beoordelingssysteem en de commercie die steeds meer terrein won ten koste van de creativiteit. Prominente producenten namen in de jaren tien ontslag, matige remakes en exorbitante microtransacties besmeurden de torenhoge reputatie, en gekneveld door Activision ging de pc-versie van de afgelikte boterham Call of Duty op de servers van Blizzard draaien. Nog het meest vernederend: Blizzards ambitieuze entree in een genre dat nota bene uit een van zijn eigen games was ontstaan, werd een flop.<br>Het is verdrietig dat Blizzard niet langer de legendarische developer van weleer is.
