October 1963. At the peak of their popularity, the Springfields split - sibling tensions and musical differences being the main reasons. Tom Springfield found success as a songwriter and producer while Dusty Springfield recorded nine songs. Wisely, she selected I Only Want to Be With You as her first single…

Discovering my ancestral connection to Pete Seeger brought to mind this song, “Old Folkie” by Harry Chapin, written about Pete Seeger.

This lyric was written in 1979. We’ll need “Old Folkies” in 2025.

He's the man with the banjo and the 12-string guitar
And he's singing us the songs that tell us who we are
When you look in his eyes you know that somebody's in there

Peggy Lee wrote “It's a Good Day" while doing the housework. Recently married with a young daughter, she’d semi-retired from performing, but the melodies and words kept flowing from her.

“It’s a Good Day” was released on 16 November 1946 and reached number 16 on the charts the following January. Peggy Lee duetted the song with Bing Crosby on four occasions, and many artists subsequently recorded their own versions.

Bette Davis Eyes was written by Donna Weiss and Jackie DeShannon in 1974. Jackie DeShannon recorded the song that year, but Kim Carnes’ version in 1981 took the song to new heights.

The Jackie DeShannon and Kim Carnes versions are totally different - chalk and cheese. Which made me wonder - which cover versions do you prefer to the originals?

Music Notes

Jane Morgan (pictured) enjoyed a long career on Broadway, on record, on television, and in nightclubs and movies. Her career blossomed in America and Europe, and featured a number of million sellers including The Day the Rains Came (number one in Britain in 1959), which she released as a double A side, an English version of the song and a French version - Le jour où la pluie viendra.

A music chart with a difference, from 16 February 1834. Note that female singers dominated. Madame Vestris (pictured) was Lucia Elizabeth Vestris (née Elizabetta Lucia Bartolozzi; 3 March 1797 – 8 August 1856). She was an actress and a contralto opera singer. She was also a theatre producer and manager.
