This was pretty much the last time I shot photos on slide film. For once, I didn’t add the grain - on the contrary, I even reduced it a bit. The following year, I bought my first digital camera, a Nikon Coolpix 950, boasting an incredible 2 megapixels. I stumbled upon this piece yesterday while visiting my parents in my hometown (not a city, just a small village!). Since I wasn’t sure if I was even allowed to publish this photo, I first had to look into what’s known in Germany as 'Panoramafreiheit' (freedom of panorama). And yes, as far as I understand, publicly placed permanent works can be shared (§ 59 UrhG). KayMinimalism in photography hinges on reduction: stripping away all unnecessary elements so that the subject remains in clear focus. At least that’s my interpretation. Even with this picture, I find the <a href="https://pixelfed.de/discover/tags/minimalism?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#minimalism</a> tag borderline - there’s still too much going on. Many images under <a href="https://pixelfed.de/discover/tags/minimalism?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#minimalism</a> aren’t minimal enough for me to warrant the tag. But that’s the beauty of it: everyone thinks differently, focusing on content or text or other things. And besides, pigeonholing rarely leads to anything good. KayAs a kid, I was fascinated by astronomy and dreamed of owning a massive telescope. I even looked up how to hypersensitize film with gas. Of course, nothing ever came of it - what child can afford such gear? Now I could, but I’m not keen on freezing through long nights and losing sleep. Sure, there are cheaper, fully automated telescopes that send images straight to your phone, but here’s my main point: Where’s the creativity beyond a bit of editing? There’s no alternative angle, no moving closer or further away. That’s precisely why I enjoy capturing everyday details - like this frost-covered tail light. Instead of gazing at distant stars, I focus on the shapes and textures right in front of me. It’s a totally different approach but still packed with wonder. Sometimes, seeking the cosmic in the mundane can be just as satisfying as reaching for the stars. KayI’m definitely no spider enthusiast. I was already jittery editing the photo - then the cat snuck up on me, rubbing against my legs, and I nearly jumped out of my skin! Still, I have to admit: it’s kind of…beautiful. It’s probably a giant golden orb weaver, and apparently they’re harmless. As far as I recall, it was at least palm-sized, though in my mind, remembered spiders just keep on growing. Anyway, I’m glad I didn’t panic when a few of these big specimens spun their webs right in front of our cabin and the neighboring ones - literally blocking the entrance. We arrived at night in the dark, and I couldn’t really see them. If I’d taken the wrong path, I’d have walked straight into that eight-legged greeting party. Even now, the thought sends chills down my spine. But hey, they’re kinda pretty - right? KayDefied the icy grip of winter for a two-hour photo hunt today - so worth it! Out of about 120 shots, a solid 18 have survived the initial purge. For now, at least. KayThis morning, after over a week of not touching my camera, I finally headed back into the forest. Out of more than 50 photos, only two survived the culling process. I wish I could have documented my encounter with the deer, but let’s just say they weren’t feeling particularly cooperative with my autofocus. I was on my way back, tired, frozen, and honestly not in the mood for "mindful photography" anymore. That’s when I saw them - two deer, maybe five meters away. We froze. A surreal staring contest ensued. Fifteen long seconds where neither of us moved a muscle. I thought for sure they’d sprint away, but no, they just stood there, sizing me up. Of course, I tried to grab my camera. Big mistake. That was their cue to dash a few meters away. Then, they stopped, turned and gave me that unmistakable "deer in charge" glance over their shoulder. This little game repeated itself a few more times until they eventually dissolved into the fog, leaving me with nothing but a memory and a very cold pair of hands. Maybe that’s the point, though. KayIt might not be obvious from this image, given the high ISO, but dusk was already settling in, and this was my last shot of the day. The fog had wrapped everything in its soft embrace from morning till evening, so of course, I had to go out not once, but twice. On the second round, I got so lost in the moment - and in the mist - that time slipped right past me. It wasn’t until my ISO started sky-high climbing, and the camera began whispering, ‘Buddy, it’s too dark in here,’ that I realized how late it was. It’s a shame—I would have loved to stay out longer.
