MikeDunnAuthorToday in Labor History March 6, 1925: Miners in Cape Breton, Canada, struck against the British Empire Steel Corporation (BESCO). They’d been striking against BESCO regularly for the past 5 years over wage cuts. The 1925 strike lasted 5 months. Company police killed one miner, William Davis. BESCO eventually went bankrupt. These strikes were part of the Canadian Labour Revolt (1918-1925) led by the One Big Union. The Vancouver General Strike (1918) and the Winnipeg General Strike (1919) inspired the OBU and subsequent strikes of the Labor Revolt. The OBU was also influenced by the IWW, the Spartacist Uprising in Germany, and the Communist Revolution in Russia. Y⃒̸̷̝̜̙ͥͥͥngmarApparently steel gets brittle from cold at much higher temperatures than I previously thought. It was maybe -12°C when I broke several bits (from different sets/makes) in a row before giving up. MikeDunnAuthorToday in Labor History February 26, 1941: 14,000 workers struck at Bethlehem Steel’s Lackawanna mill in Buffalo, New York. As a defense contractor, the company had $1.5 billion worth of armament orders, but refused to pay the minimum wage mandated for government contracts. Furthermore, they had recently fired 1,000 workers, blaming their last work stoppage for damaging some coke ovens. The pickets effectively stopped scabs from getting in. After less than 2 days, the company agreed to rehire the fired men and began talks on a raise and union recognition.
