Aujourd'hui, journée internationale des droits des femmes, j'avais envie de rendre hommage aux féministes d'hier qui nous permis d'être qui nous sommes aujourd'hui à travers deux images: celle des suffragettes et celle des manifestantes de mai 68.

I’ve shown her in my #linocut with a diagram of the dividers from her 1st of 26 (!) patents, one of her diagrams about the origin & growth of ripple marks & one of her diagrams of an electric arc lamp (a subject on which she literally wrote the textbook).

This has to be one of of the most iconic photographs of the 20th century from March 1907. Sixteen years old suffragette Dora Thewlis.
A poor mill worker from Honley in Huddersfield she was a member of the Women's Social and Political Union At a demonstration in London she was arrested and served a week in prison.
Vanished without a trace but actually emigrated to Australia... and her ten grandchildren are very proud

Our graphic novel No Surrender is an adaptation of the original book by suffragette Constance Maud. The book ties in real-life events with a fictional tale of a group of young women in the midst of the battle to gain the vote, and those who are standing against them.
During the #Suffragette movement (after 1910), women would break windows to protest voting restrictions. Many of them used a small toffee hammer that they kept hidden inside their muffs and inside special discrete pockets they had sewn into their skirts. They would also use such pockets to hide rocks to throw at policemen.
However (and this is most relevant here), this #activism failed to achieve their goals, and in fact alienated public support for their cause, setting the movement back considerably.

No Surrender was originally written by Constance Maud about women’s struggle for the vote and equality. Our graphic novel adaptation is available in all good bookshops and libraries
