Four years ago, human rights campaigner Tanya O’Carroll took on social media giant Meta when they refused to stop collecting and processing her personal data for targeted advertising.
In March 2025, Meta settled and agreed to honour O’Carroll’s right to object.
Now it's your turn to opt-out.

As Big Tech deepens ties with the U.S. government, we face a choice: convenience or control.
I've chosen privacy. This isn’t just about tools. It’s about the internet we want to live in.
Privacy isn’t radical. It’s resistance.

In today's digital world, privacy is becoming a rare commodity. Many people are starting to realise that the convenience of popular US-based apps comes at a cost - our personal data. And when you learn that even American scientists resort to burner phones at conferences, you begin to realise: privacy isn’t a fringe concern — it’s a frontline issue.
After about a month of researching, documenting, and writing, this piece is out. Out of my brain, out of my soul.
Knowledge hurts sometimes. Acting consciously is so empowering though, and liberating.

Thinking about internet protocols like #activitypub or #atproto as just "social media", namely platforms for sharing cat images, influencers and followers, shitposting and memes, trolls and flamewars etc. is missing the point entirely.
These are merely emergent behaviors when people interact with primitive forms of "digital society".
In truth these are "societal media", they increasingly capture a good fraction of human reality. The masters of #surveillancecapitalism know this all too well.

You have a legal right to object to targeted adverts based on your personal data.
Meta should give us options for opting-out of stalker ads. Until they do, you can use our tool to make this request.

What are stalker ads?
Meta harvests personal data to track your behaviour, making assumptions about who you are and what you believe. This is used to sell targeted adverts
By settling Tanya O'Carroll's case, Meta admits that you have the right to opt-out.

The problem with #privacy people is that they tend to be diligent hard-working types, the kind of people who write and proofread long PDFs.
Only 15 (?) states in the USA still don't have a privacy law. But legislators don't need to write a long, boring bill to get most of the benefits of dealing with the Big Tech / #surveillanceCapitalism problem.
As of 2025, two short bills would do it. Put the work on the private sector, not the legislature or regulators…
Tanya O’Carrol WINS against #Meta:
Meta affirms right to OPT OUT of surveillance advertising, concedes in legal case!
Another blow to the unethical and unfair business models of Meta, Google and X: targeted ads and profiling are NOT something you must simply tolerate.
My “not a book review” of Careless People – the book Facebook doesn’t want you to read.
With highlights on Ireland’s complicity and the lengths people farmers (as I call them) will go to to appease authoritarian regimes like China.
https://ar.al/2025/03/21/careless-people/
It’s clear from this that Ireland should be stripped of the authority to enforce GDPR and, really, people farmers – and the business model of people farming in general – should be banned in the EU.
