My late father was a carpenter here in the UK - same #tradition of leaving messages, often items such as an empty pack of cigarettes.
He was delighted when he found one :)

Sorley MacLean: The Poet as Historian
24 April, National Library of Scotland, Edinburgh – free
Sorley MacLean (Somhairle MacGill-eain, 1911–1996) is a giant of 20th-century Gaelic literature. Join Professor Hugh Cheape as he looks beyond MacLean’s poetry to his sources of inspiration in landscape & community, & to his inheritance of the traditions of the Hebrides.

These days I keep seeing certain interests, hobbies, traditions and skills and thinking “that’s going to die out soon”.
Depending on what the thing is, part of me then internally reacts “that’s a shame” and/or “these things naturally all have their time”.
The usual wider response always seems to be “we need to get the Young People interested” and in this context they often mean those still in education.

Many Americans still imagine #rural communities as bastions of #tradition, where #marriage is widespread & #families w/lots of children abound. 25yrs ago, that would have been largely correct. No longer.
Research shows over the past 3 decades, women ages 15–44, marriage rates have fallen much faster for rural #women than their urban counterparts [who already broke the habit]. 1988–2018, the proportion of rural women who were married fell from 55% to 33%.
The law is clear: flags shall be flown at half-staff for thirty days after the death of a President.
But, you know, fuck the law.
Right?
Fuck. The. Law.

Alright tooters, out of curiosity (and because I am way down in this rabbit hole):
If you hear "epic" what stories do you automatically think of?
(In the interest of narrowing it down, let's say "traditional epic"!)

Renri (7th day of Zhengyue, 1st month in the traditional Chinese calendar) was the day human beings were created.
On each of the year's opening days...

...it was forbidden to kill the corresponding animals.
A tradition. We go for a walk on New Year’s Day to the Coral Beach near Claigan. This is the third time we’ve done it. It’s usually fairly busy as it is a popular place to walk here on Skye, however we went early yesterday and had it to ourselves…
“The beach is made from crushed white coral like seaweed that makes the water look tropical blue when the sun comes out.” The sun was shy and the day cold and not like the tropics at all.
In #Appalachia, we believe eating these on #NewYearsDay is a valued #tradition (FWIW, never worked for me):
#Pork and #sauerkraut: symbolizes riches, #prosperity, and long life.
Black-eyed peas: represent wealth and fortune.
..... Other standard New Year's Day Traditions:
Long noodles, which are believed to bring a long life
#Salmon, which is meant to represent progress and prosperity
In 1982, when I was in grade six, my parents were (and still are) Jehovah's Witnesses (JWs). I was not allowed to celebrate holidays. If I was caught doing so, I'd get a beating. At that time, we were friends with a huge family of JWs. While the grownups were downstairs talking on NYE, all us kids desperately wanted to celebrate new years. We needed to figure out an innocuous way of doing so such that if we were caught, it wouldn't look remiss.
We finally decided that at the stroke of midnight, we would all flush the toilets. Flush away the old year and all. We didn't get caught. We didn't get a beating.
I wonder if any of those other kids continued the tradition?
I haven't missed a year since. Want to join me in flushing away the old year?
Danish society is often oblivious to religious sensitivities. Apparently my kid will go to church today. No permission slip needed.
Message from our government run day-care:
"In addition to a lot of festive fun the children had cozy Christmas lunch with delicious food. Tomorrow the last event of the year awaits, a visit to the church, together with the other children institutions."
I hope the kids wear high-vis gear.
