Otis White<p>What is a <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/walkable" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>walkable</span></a> city? A new study says it’s the average time it takes to walk to “amenities” (schools, restaurants, shops, etc.) AND the percentage of people in the city who can do so in 15 minutes’ time. Most walkable place in the world? Milan, Italy, where nearly 98% of residents can walk to amenities. Average walk: 6.4 minutes. Cities in North America in the top 50 of walkable cities? Zero. <a href="https://www.economist.com/graphic-detail/2025/02/07/what-can-the-worlds-most-walkable-cities-teach-other-places" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">economist.com/graphic-detail/2</span><span class="invisible">025/02/07/what-can-the-worlds-most-walkable-cities-teach-other-places</span></a></p>
Otis White<p>A professor who wrote the book (literally, THE book) on redesigning <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/suburbs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>suburbs</span></a> explains why <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/walkable" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>walkable</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/neighborhoods" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>neighborhoods</span></a> are important to health and human connection. She also explains what makes places walkable (short blocks, lots of sidewalks) and what makes walking dangerous and difficult (suburban highways, cul-de-sacs and efforts to prevent “cut-through” traffic). <a href="https://www.ajc.com/news/health-news/in-atlanta-urban-sprawl-and-human-sprawl-are-linked/DGC2KGOETRCNBC2AXCJQDHV44E/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">ajc.com/news/health-news/in-at</span><span class="invisible">lanta-urban-sprawl-and-human-sprawl-are-linked/DGC2KGOETRCNBC2AXCJQDHV44E/</span></a></p>
Ben Fulton<p>Do Car-Free Zones Hurt Disabled People?</p><p>"Disabled people are actually less likely to drive than nondisabled people “and more likely to get around [by] walking and rolling and taking transit.” Car-heavy cities are also disproportionately dangerous for disabled folks: A 2015 study by Georgetown University researchers found that the rate of vehicle-pedestrian deaths among wheelchair users was 36 percent higher than that of the overall population"</p><p><a href="https://www.motherjones.com/environment/2024/12/car-free-disability-congestion-walkable-cities/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">motherjones.com/environment/20</span><span class="invisible">24/12/car-free-disability-congestion-walkable-cities/</span></a></p><p><a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/Walkable" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Walkable</span></a> <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/accessibility" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>accessibility</span></a></p>
John Schrag<p>Currently I’m visiting my in-laws in a suburban area north of San Diego. It’s such a contrast to my urban neighbourhood in Toronto, where everything I need is within a 15 minute walk. Here the landscape consists of tiny islands of retail chain stores, each surrounded by vast parking lots. Everyone drives everywhere. When I suggested to my host that I would walk to the nearest strip mall, she reacted with horror and tried to dissuade me.</p><p>There are bike lanes, and (I am told) public transit, but I have yet to see a bicycle or a bus anywhere. I can’t imagine what it would be like to live here if you were unable to drive. You’d be completely dependent.</p><p>On a positive note, my in-laws told me that all the kids now have e-bikes, mainly because there are no school busses and the parents are tired of driving them to school each day. So hopefully the next generation will grow up seeing them as a viable form of transportation. (Their parents, on the other hand, worry about safety and strongly encourage driving and car ownership as soon as the kids are old enough)</p><p><a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/biking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>biking</span></a> <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/walkable" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>walkable</span></a></p>

AJ SadauskasAnd not a car in sight...<br> <br> Laisvės Alėja (Independence Way) is a fully pedestrianised street that runs east-west across most of Kaunas.<br> <br> It is lined with shops, restaurants, cafe/bars, museums, outdoor dining areas, and historical sites (such as the old Presidential Palace, which was used from 1918 until the 1930s). Three-to-four floors of apartments can be found above the shops.<br> <br> A small tree-lined park can be found in the middle of the street, with bicycle paths and outdoor dining areas on the sides.<br> <br> During summer, the bars and cafes fill up as lunch approaches, and they remain busy well into the evening (with twilight in Summer sometime around 10:30pm).<br> <br> Cuisine varies from traditional Lithuanian fare (such as Cepeliniai and Saltibarciai) to modern Italian, Turkish, Georgian, Japanese, American, Thai, and more. (That includes these delicious burritos, tuna salads, and ribs.) <br> <br> The street begins as Vilnius Gatve at the town hall square in the old city, just near Kaunas Castle and the confluence of the Nemunas and Neris Rivers.<br> <br> It continues for roughly 2.3 kilometres across almost the entire length of the city, to the historic Church of St Michael the Archangel (Sv. Arkangelo Mykolo Baznycia).<br> <br> It is bisected by a second pedestrianised street running north-south that links it to the war museum, the Zalgris basketball arena, and the university.<br> <br> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/Kaunas?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Kaunas</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/Travel?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Travel</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/Tourism?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Tourism</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/Urbanism?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Urbanism</a> <a class="u-url" href="https://pixelfed.social/@urbanism@slrpnk.net" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@urbanism@slrpnk.net</a> <a class="u-url" href="https://pixelfed.social/@fuck_cars@lemmy.ml" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@fuck_cars@lemmy.ml</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/cycling?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#cycling</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/bikes?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#bikes</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/cycle?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#cycle</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/bike?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#bike</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/pedestrian?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#pedestrian</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/walkable?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#walkable</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/walking?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#walking</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/walk?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#walk</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/Lithuania?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Lithuania</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/Lietuva?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Lietuva</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/food?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#food</a>
