So many Ichneumonids, so little time. I also collected this Exetastes bifenestratus, a species I'd never seen before. #insects #ichneumonidae #wasps

Picture of my Grandma (left) and another female pilot testing bombers during WWII.
She was a part of the WASPS.
Had run away from the orphanage at age 14, decided to get her pilots license by 16 and joined the airforce.

Just baking the insect hotel, as one does, to kill any dermestid beetles, book lice, and mites that are hiding in the cracks after the bee and wasp cocoons have been removed. #BeeHotel #InsectHotel #bees #wasps #hymenoptera #insects #pollinators #entomology
And here the craddle of a gall wasp: a wasp that knows how to genetically and hormonally manipulate a plant to make a nurturing house for its offspring.
The #scifi book “A door into ocean” by Joan Slonczweski with its plant-based healing nurseries didn’t need to look beyond the marvels that wasps are for inspiration.
#NewSpecies!
New parasitoid wasp from #canada just flew in:
Perilampus seneca

I've been imaging some of our searcher wasps (Ichneumonidae), in a futile attempt to stay ahead of the hyperdiversity. There are seemingly endless variations on these wasps. This is Tromatobia notator, found in a marsh along the Texas coast. #Insects #Ichneumonidae #wasps #Entomology
A female Xorides wasp has sensed a beetle grub deep in this redbud tree, and she drills through the wood to deposit an egg on it. Illinois. #insects #Ichneumonidae #Hymenoptera #wasps
Bookworms? Oh no no no, this is Australia, we have book WASPS.
@alexwild That's a lot of Chrysis!
My favourite Chrysididae is the Emerald Cuckoo wasp, Stilbum cyanurum. Always get a kick out of seeing it again, most often on mint flowers.

Some of what I do as an entomology curator is Chrysis management.
Was cleaning barn windows and came upon one of these, a nest of some species of mud dauber #wasp.
Wish I could get these critters to repair the putty in these old windows.
Dammit, I forgot to follow this up.
Special thanks to @Armadillosoft for suggesting iNaturalist. The folks there confirmed @alexwild’s ID: they're female flower wasps of family Thynnidae, subfamily Thynninae—https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thynnidae.
As @si_fuller suggested, they *were* doing something with pheromones: namely, looking for mates.
Cheers to everyone who helped out!
