Firefighting is hard enough here in the US. But South Korea, suffering from horrendous fires now, has its own set set of challenges.
“A combination of an aging society and a reliance on temporary workers meant older people were disproportionately on the frontlines tackling South Korea's devastating wildfires this week.”
“About 73% of South Korea's 9,472 seasonal wildfire fighters are over 60-years-old, according to the forest service's latest data, often the only people available to work such schedules.
“The position has no age limit and pays $50 per day, employed during January-May and November-December periods, according to the service's website.”
And sadly, some of those older firefighters have died, including a 73-year-old pilot who died when his helicopter crashed.

Recognizing the interconnection of human & #marine #ecosystems is essential, as the stress in one often affects the other.
If you see a marine mammal in distress, please give them space and call the Marine Mammal Care Center’s Marine Mammal Hotline at 1-800-39-WHALE (94253).
#DomoicAcid can also accumulate in #shellfish & small #fish that feed on the #algae, leading to poisoning in larger #marine animals & humans who consume contaminated #seafood.
Addressing the urgent need to monitor the impact of harmful #AlgalBlooms on #MarineSpecies requires collective strategies. The destructive #California #wildfires, which have contaminated our #oceans & are threatening #MarineLife, serve as a critical call to action for collaborative efforts to protect marine environments….
When #marine animals ingest #DomoicAcid, they endure severe neurological symptoms such as seizures, disorientation, &, ultimately, death. These incidents often necessitate euthanasia due to the high mortality rates associated w/this toxin. This alarming rise in domoic acid poisoning cases not only threatens individual #MarineSpecies but also highlights the broader impacts #humans have on marine #ecosystems.
#Wildfires, including the #EatonFire & #PalisadesFire, have significant repercussions on #marine #ecosystems. The ash & debris from these fires can enter waterways & eventually the #ocean, altering nutrient levels & fostering conditions favorable to the growth of harmful #AlgalBlooms. The #toxic byproducts from these fires can exacerbate #OceanWarming, further promoting the frequency of these toxic blooms. This can lead to increased production of #DomoicAcid.
#DomoicAcid is a potent neurotoxin produced by certain phytoplankton species, which are significant contributors to harmful #AlgalBlooms. These toxins accumulate in the tissues of #MarineMammals & other #wildlife consuming contaminated prey. Recent changes in #ocean conditions,…intensified by #environmental factors such as the #EatonFire & #PalisadesFire, have accelerated the proliferation of these harmful algal blooms.
#Crisis On The Coast: #DomoicAcid Poisoning Strands 140 #SeaLions & 50 #Dolphins On #California Beaches
The recent influx of #marine #wildlife affected by domoic acid poisoning off the coast of Southern California underscores a critical #environmental crisis, w/≧140 sea lions suffering from this debilitating poison & reports of at least 50 stranded dolphins along local beaches.

"While final breakdown of ages has yet to be tallied, authorities say most of the 28 people killed were older people, who make up an above average proportion of people living in rural areas and among the seasonal firefighting force."

I don't know what kind of #asheville visibility I have here, but... here's a thread for #wnc #northcarolina #wildfires
TL;DR: Asheville and WNC, be ready to evac and don't rely on local govs or the media.
Not to be alarmist, but I learned some lessons from Helene, and they're being confirmed now: City/county government and local media WILL NOT alert you in time to act if there's an emergency. You're in charge. And it's time to take that seriously, because these fires are no joke.
"Pointing to ultra-dry conditions and strong winds that have worsened the damage, Lee Han-kyung, disaster and safety division chief, said: “This wildfire has once again exposed the harsh reality of a climate crisis unlike anything we’ve experienced before.”
The #wildfires originated in Uiseong and have been moving rapidly eastward, spreading almost to the coast, carried by gusty winds and with dry conditions aggravating the situation."

'Higher temperatures amplified by human-caused climate change contributed to the existing seasonally dry conditions, "turning dry landscapes into dangerous fire fuel" in the region, the Climate Central group, an independent body made up of scientists and researchers, said in a report.'
'Wildfires raging in South Korea doubled in size on Thursday from a day earlier, as authorities called the blazes the country's worst natural fire disaster with at least 26 people killed and historic temples incinerated.'
