I have very little to say today, but wanted to share an image. So, instead, I leave this quote.

A slightly bent tree sits in the middle of the frame, covered in heavy white snow and ice rhime on the downhill slope of a steep and snowy bank. The snow covered trees beside it create a darker border around the frame and shelter the banks from the winds. The warmth of the sun barely touches the subject trees as the sky behind, full of heavy cloud begins to lift allowing the sunlight through.

It's funny how we will sometimes pass by a location a dozen times and not give it a second thought until the right light or conditions present.

While snowshoeing last week in the #Vancouver #Mountains I came to a spot freshly covered in snow, that I've never seen without its usual trail. I would never have thought to take a photo here had it not been for the fresh snowfall covering all indication that a path laid here.

A series of snow and rhime covered trees stand on a freshly snowed hillside in the North shore mountains of Vancouver. The sun just breaking through the clouds cast subtle shadows. And the clouds in the background whip up with the winds and temperature change caused by the Sun. Creating drama in the sky. A distant snow covered rockledge and peak can be seen to the far right. And an indication of the far valley below can be seen briefly between some of the larger trees.

Some incredibly vibrant views from my driveway. While on the previous post we were talking about the greens and purples of the Aurora, in that last photo there is a huge curtain of red above the green arc.

Both these are caused by atmospheric oxygen, but the reds are from oxygen that is higher in the atmosphere. When these gases get hit by the charged particles from the solar wind, they vibrate to expel the positive charge and return to a neutral state. Depending on the amount density of the gasses (lower in the atmosphere has more, higher less) the vibration has a different wavelength that our eyes perceive as light. So reds are happening about 200km in the air with the greens happening about 100km up.
The reds can be somewhat difficult to see with your naked eye but in instances like the second photo they are very vivid to the earthly observer.

This was my view earlier this week as I began my descent down the mountain and dropped below the tree line. It was much steeper than the pic shows— needed to proceed carefully on my snowshoes. Had to say goodbye to the views of the nearby mountains as I disappeared into the forest! #FootpathFriday #mountains #winter
