Politics aside, new research shows there are good financial reasons to back working from home

Shove your office mandates, people still prefer working from home, some 46% said that if their current boss no longer allowed them to #workfromhome, they'd be "unlikely to stay in their current #job."
Threat to quit still preferred to #commuting on packed public transport

Part of President Trump’s remolding of the federal workforce is an in-person work requirement. While government remote work increased during the pandemic, it was trending downward before Mr. Trump’s order. #trump #FederalWorkers #WorkFromHome

The University of Houston is rescinding its hybrid remote work policy. Staff will be required to work on campus full-time starting March 1.
Union organising for software professionals is a great target market for the #Fediverse. Here are some of the issues.
1. Remote work or paid commuting.
2. Anonymity for union organisers.
3. Ergonimic workstations, not laptops.
4. (Australian) Right to disconnect.
5. Equal treatment for employees, H1B, temps, and contractors.
6. No AI.
7. End harassment and discrimination.
8. Local issues.

Like Elon Musk, 1 in 3 bosses admit they are pushing RTO because they’re so upset about wasting money on all those empty desks

My thought is that I'm a lot more productive with a set number of tasks I want to get done in the day, not a set number of hours to sit at my desk. But the latter wins with managers because it's traditional.
And I like working from the office. It works for me, but I'm not here for bullshit reasons.
One-third of companies surveyed in a recent report from Resume.org said that their company’s lease agreements are the anchoring force behind their return-to-office policies.
Employees are being marched back to the office. But why?

This article points out the obvious: forcing workers back into the office is not about productivity — it noticeably makes productivity worse and ruins morale. I think it's about workplace dynamics: egotistical managers with outdated ideas who want to feel important and have no regard for the individual needs of other people or their health as we head into five years of this pandemic.
The share of residents working from home in the D.C. area almost quadrupled between 2019 and 2022 at its peak, according to the Coworking Magazine — and that may have had a positive environmental
impact across the region.

Working from home with a #puppy is quite the adventure. We had a walk this morning, lots of potty breaks (she's doing very well at asking to go outside). I made her a frozen Kong, gave her one of her bones with pop in treats, and a dental chew. 2 hours later she's finally starting to crash. I also have to work in the living room bc she doesn't like being locked in my office with me #puppiesofmastodon #workfromhome #dogsofmastodon
“More than 80% of hybrid employees report being highly engaged at work, compared to 72% of on-site employees, and Stanford researchers found that hybrid work improves employee morale and boosts corporate profits.
Many have pointed out that a sense of power and control are what’s behind the continued push to have employees in the office.”

During Covid people discovered this amazing thing called work-life balance.
But corporate America still has a plantation mentality & is still deeply confused about the difference between employment, a contract for 8 hours of work for a set amount of pay, w/ slavery - being on call 24/7 & no control over work hours or family time.
So what did workers figure out? The only winning move is not to play.

#WorkFromHome full time would cut emissions significantly
"The survey found that government employees who #telework full time had “significantly less” #emissions associated with #transportation, potentially slashing them by more than 60 per cent. Those working from home full time saw an increase of energy use at home by less than 10 per cent and the emissions associated with the internet of telework were “negligible.”"
Even the International Monetary Fund thinks #RemoteWork #FlexibleWork #WorkFromHome is a better idea than #ReturnToOffice.
“A fivefold increase in remote work since the pandemic could boost economic growth and bring wider benefits”
