I'm fucking disappointed that the Guardian isn't being better than this. I know that mainstream media is always going to be used to push political agenda, but this is just so blatantly obvious with these headlines occurring within a week of each other.

Victoria isn't in a youth crime crisis.

Youth crime happens - and we know the biggest contributor to crime is poverty (something governments can address, but refuse to).

However, funding programs to address poverty and youth crime won't get votes. Scaring voters and then "tough on crime" rhetoric about "tightening bail laws" (which will put Aboriginal people's lives at risk!) gets votes.

Tyler Cawthray, an assistant professor of criminology and criminal justice at Bond University, has charted the similar narrative of a crime crisis engulfing Queensland, where the Liberal National party won government in October after campaigning on an “adult time for adult crime” policy.

Cawthray said across New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria, youth crime has generally decreased over the last decade, including during Covid.

Victoria has one of the lowest rates of youth crime in the country, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics data, with only the Australian Capital Territory and South Australia having a rate below it.

The #youth didn't deprive themselves of real connections due to #socialmedia - these connections have been *taken from them* due to precarious finances and jobs, longer working hours and clampdowns on hedonism and third spaces compared to the 90s and 00s (and by the 2000s the Internet was already a big part of many peoples lives)

Democratic California governor Gavin (secretly a fascist) #Newsom started a podcast and on his first episode platformed far-right, anti-LGBTQ+ influencer Charlie Kirk.

At one point, Newsom stated he was "completely aligned" with Kirk on #transgender participation in sports. He also appeared to express agreement with restrictions on medical care for incarcerated transgender people and limits on gender-affirming healthcare for transgender #youth.

Fuck him, and fuck any democrats who platform the alt right.

And it will be THEIR future since they're young and likely have years left to live, unlike senior citizens such as me. The choices they're making now are creating the future they and perhaps their children and grandchildren will have to live with.

I hope they'll be happy at what they've chosen for their future and that of others, so they can have the freedom to call despised others ugly names and then laugh and party to celebrate that liberty.

This discussion (/1) brings to mind Brock Colyar's reports about a party she attended in DC on the first night of Trump;'s second presidency. The party was full of young MAGA voters "drinking, smoking, flirting, networking, but mostly congratulating one another on their big win." Many of those MAGA voters had turned right to elect Trump this election.
