#Firefox continues #ManifestV2 support as #Chrome disables MV2 ad-blockers
Upgraded Pi-hole to the new version 6 this morning. Ran into a few issues. I had to reconfigure the upstream DNS servers. Apparently, those settings were lost during the upgrade. Easily done in the web interface.
Except, it also did not offer to disable lighttpd, so you may need to run 'sudo systemctl stop lighttpd' and/or 'sudo apt remove lighttpd' after the update to get the web interface working again.

@pernillet Open source software to the rescue! #ublockorigin , #ghostery and #firefox with containers will offer good protection agsinst the ad hell.
Now explain why there is no micropayment service for media, that would allow to chip in - without tracking, of course :)

@SecurityWriter #AdBlocking is both #security and #aaccessibility tool!
#Google #GoogleChrome #AdBlockers #AdBlocking: "Google’s new rules will likely affect almost all Chromium browsers, including Chrome and Microsoft Edge (a support page from Microsoft shows that Edge is also losing access to the Web Request API). While that sounds bleak, you still have a couple of options to keep blocking ads like you always have.
For now, there’s an easy but temporary solution to get uBlock Origin or other Manifest V2 ad blockers working again: just turn them back on.
According to Google’s Chromium blog, while the company is currently in the process of automatically disabling all Manifest V2 extensions, which is what your current ad blocker probably is, it will temporarily allow users to manually turn them back on “for a short time.” This toggle will go away “over time,” but given that not everyone is even getting their extensions disabled yet—it seems to be happening in waves, and my uBlock Origin works fine at the moment—you should still see it for now.
If Chrome tells you that it’s turned off your ad blocker, follow these steps to re-enable it."

New blog post!
This time I talk how I set up WireGuard and PiHole to create an tracking and advertisement blocking solution that works wherever I go.
I can now block ads on my smartphone when using any cellular or Wi-Fi network, wherever I go.
And the results are wild, there is so much dirty traffic coming from my smartphone.
Take a look and leave some feedback :)
「 But one of the biggest changes is in disallowing "remotely hosted code," which includes the filtering lists that ad blockers keep regularly updated. Ad blockers that want to update their filtering lists, perhaps in response to pivots by platforms like Google's YouTube and ad servers, will have to do so through the Chrome Web Store's review process. Ad-blocking coders see it as an intentional gatekeeping and slowing 」
Google will start cracking down on adblocking extensions next week.
「 Google, which makes about 77 percent of its revenue from advertising, has not published a serious explanation as to why Manifest V3 limits content filtering, and it's not clear how that aligns with the goals of "improving the security, privacy, performance and trustworthiness" 」

With #Google Chrome starting to make #adblocking as difficult as possible (Google IS an advertisement platform, after all), it's time for change.
Get #Firefox.
Yes, really, do it now.
Get #Firefox.

In June, #enshittification to come for #Chrome (and its derivatives) : #Google's #ManifestV3 will take effect.
- #AdBlockers will be limited to 30,000 rules … no more
- They will no longer be able to update themselves daily, but only when new versions of extensions are published (which Google sometimes takes up to 3 weeks to validate)
To sum up, #AdBlocking extensions will always be late on websites, and in any case will not have enough rules to cover all sites.

Interesting paper about #adblocking that I just found out
Energy Conservation with Open Source Ad Blockers
This study, although preliminary, clearly showed enormous potential for open source ad blockers to reduce consumer time waiting for Internet ads to load as well as the electricity needed to run their computers (and other electronic technologies) during that time. In addition, the externalities (including premature fatalities) associated with fossil-fuel-based electricity spent using computers by eliminating ads during Internet browsing and video streaming would be reduced.https://www.mdpi.com/2227-7080/8/2/18/htm
Targeted Ads are a Cybersecurity Risk
As malvertising continues to rise, increasingly delivering #malware and redirecting users to #phishing websites, more and more websites plead with visitors to disable their adblockers. Even Google has responded harshly to adblockers across its platforms...
Should you always disable your adblocker when asked? I don't think you should - targeted ads have shown to be quite the security risk _on top of_ being invasive to your #privacy.

TLDR: #Piracy and #AdBlocking will continue until the situation improves!
I'm so tired of the discourse on #adblocking being framed as users vs. creators.
Creators suffer from rampant unregulated advertising attached to their hard work. Seeing their labours being exploited to promote scams and enrich surveillance capitalists with no control or recourse. Seeing potential subscribers close the tab because their impression of the channel in those crucial first few seconds was some obnoxious ad.
You think makers *want* this system? Hell no. We just want an income.
