#aurora

Last night, a friend organised a nighttime bike ride on the ice road to the neighbouring village of Dettah. It's about 6.5km across the frozen bay. It was quite slippery on the glare ice, even with studded tires, so we went at a leisurely pace and chatted away. When we got to Dettah, as if on cue, the #aurora erupted into a dancing, swirling riot of colour. It was one of the best shows I've ever seen, which I hope comes across in these low res. photos. We stood enrapt in our bike helmets, or lay back on the ice to save our craning necks until it settled down into a placid glow in the distance before biking back to town.

Having a job getting my photographic project ducks in a row at the moment. So hearing of a large aurora display this evening came as a bit of a relief - even if I didn't get the optimum moment, there was still a fair bit going strong by the time I made it out to check.

Also: first use of new little-tripod. It seems to work, although I fast remember why I hate ball-headers.

"Earth’s atmosphere is made up of different gases, mainly nitrogen and oxygen. The color of an aurora depends on the type of gas involved and how high up the collision occurs.

Aurora displays can occur at heights between approximately 80 and 500 km (50–311 miles) above Earth’s surface.

This also affects the colors that we see in the sky."
