Sherco coal-fired power plant (largest in Minnesota) will be replaced by solar arrays being constructed on site.

*New* They're adding an iron-air battery to the solar installation to provide power when there's no sun.

PV arrays will produce up to 710 MW, whereas the first Fe-air batteries will be 10 MW. Not the scale needed, but Form Energy just started manufacturing, so this is a pilot of sorts.

"Technologies that help us address climate change still have the potential to cause harm, and taking that seriously is crucial." technologyreview.com/2025/02/1

“The EPA tested for one of the pollutants that measures air quality index – particulate size. This is what the Monterey Bay Air Resource District (MBARD) does when it produces an evaluation of air quality. Neither agency tests for heavy metals. Heavy metals testing was done by Dr. Ivano Aiello of the Moss Landing Marine Labs around the Elkhorn Slough and by the California Department of Toxic Substances Control with Monterey County Environmental Health Department.”—Supervisor Glenn Church, District 2, Monterey County Board of Supervisors mailchi.mp/co/supervisor-churc

MIT Technology Review · What a major battery fire means for the future of energy storageBy Casey Crownhart

i have a complex question that i've tried to independently investigate, but i just can't seem to find any real-world reviews/explanations/examples.
so: are you using a domestic portable battery/power station without solar to power your home at least part of the time? i'm looking for suggestions (eg anker, ecoflow) & a brief primer about how it works & how easy it is to set up.
i'm really trying to get away from dino juice as much as possible.
THANK YOU KINDLY!

Encouraging news on #climate:

How to build a battery big enough to solve the world’s energy problem: these batteries could harness the wind & sun to replace coal & gas.

Hokkaido, Japan is turning to a new generation of batteries designed to stockpile massive amounts of energy — a critical step toward replacing power plants fueled by coal, gas &oil, which create a third of global greenhouse gas emissions.

The Washington Post · Utilities build flow batteries big enough to oust coal, gas power plantsBy Nicolás Rivero, Emily Wright

"Electricity from large ground-mounted solar PV systems combined with batteries has become cheaper than that generated from fossil power sources in Germany, researchers from the country’s Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems have found.

#Photovoltaic systems now produce electricity much more cheaply than coal or gas-fired power plants, even in combination with #BatteryStorage systems,” the institute said. "

Over a month ago I promised a blog on my Heat Pump and Solar Panels and Battery Storage.

I've finally hit "publish" (well, actually "rsync" but whatever)

It may, or may not, answer any/all questions you have about this. If not, maybe ask me here and I'll try to reply and forget to include that in a future update.

I just got a check for nearly $1,800 from #Eversource for letting them use the power in my batteries during summer peak usage times. Paying customers to use their stored power during spikes is cheaper for them than building new generation capacity.
If you're on the fence about installing #solar panels with #BatteryStorage in #Massachusetts, this is a good reason to consider it. At this rate the batteries will more than pay for themselves over their usable life.

The biggest shift was the upgrade to triple glazing. Installers wanted my dad to throw away the hand crafted wooden window frames. But with the help of a local carpenter he devised a way to beef up the frames to hold the weight.

Eventually, as PV panel prices dropped and after finally, there was a subsidy package in place my dad had #PV #SolarPanels installed together with a cloud #batterystorage.

Most #PV installations are carried out on south facing roofs, ours is East-West facing.
