21/03/2025 - Evening walk after work. I felt tired today. The air was good for the head. Cloudy and not too cold. Staying light for longer now so didn't need the headtorch. Saw my first Dog's Mercury of spring. I've been looking for them the last week as we don't get much round here. A nice find that made me happy.

19/03/2025 - Cold night on the hill. We took the scope with us on our evening walk. The sky was clear but slightly hazy. Tonight's photo is of the flaming star nebula. Whilst waiting (photo took about 2hrs) the aurora popped by to say hello. Quick snap with my camera (bit wobbly as I didn't have my tripod), it didn't last long but it was nice.

01/03/2025 - A nice walk up the Buck today, a fine hill on the border between Aberdeenshire and Moray. The sunshine was lovely on the way up. We had our tea on top and watched the sun set. Dark on way back down. Stars were really good. Not much moon and the night sky is Bortle 3 here so nice and dark compared to home.

Near the start of our walk. It's an open landscape here. There's a deserted farm in the distance. Heather and grass with an old stone wall running through the shot. Not easy to make a living round here. More a way of life.
Nearly at the top. View across the last section of heather and peat hags to the pointy top of the Buck. It looks fine in the evening light.
View from the high lands. Low late sunlight makes the hills beyond look golden. There's a strip of snow laying on the next hill, which is appropriately named Hill of Snowy Slack.
The rocky top of the Buck. Getting dark now. Mrs Spaceways and the trigpoint silhouetted against the twilight sky. Venus and a crescent moon beyond.

18/01/2025 - Evening walk to see some stars. It had been a busy day. It was nice to spend the evening in the quiet of the universe. Just us and trillions of stars. Up and round the hill. We had tea with us and our scope. We found a quiet spot, hidden away and watched the night sky turn for a few hours. Temp was close to zero but the stars were worth it.

Photo is M33 Triangulum Galaxy. 2.73 million light-years away and thought to be home to 40 billion stars.

An hour past sunset. There's a nice fading yellow/blue light to the sky as it darkens beyond trees. Venus can be seen on the left with a faint Saturn next to it.
Our spot for a few hours. One of us setting up the tripod for the scope in the dark. We did have to move a little soon after, just a short distance to get away from the wind as it was cold and rocking the scope.

27/12/2024 - Evening visit to Tap o' Noth. A fine hill in Aberdeenshire with a magic hillfort on top. Cloudy but we saw a few stars later. Temperature starting to drop now after the last few mild days. We reached the trigpoint about an hour after sunset. We sat within the ramparts and had our tea and a brew. An hour flew by and the sky turned dark. It was time to make our way down and home. A magic visit, I like this place very much.

On the track up Tap o' Noth (you can see the hill in the distance in the photo) we came across a small yellow sign on a gate, it read 'Grampian Amateur Teleportation Society - Assembly Point'!! I have no idea but it made me smile.

One of us standing by the trigpoint on top of the hill. The trigpoint is on the big ramparts of an old hillfort. It's vitrified and ancient (sing along time!). The far hill is Ben Rinnes. The photo makes it look quite light but it's nearly an hour past sunset and really a good bit darker then this. Nearly headtorch time.
After sitting for an hour having our tea, it was time to head down. Photo is of one of us lighting the trigpoint with a headtorch in the dark.

06/11/2024 - Evening walk in the Milky Way. We went looking for the Andromeda Galaxy after @bisamsee had mentioned it last night. The sky wasn't as dark tonight but we still managed to find it in the bins. Only got 6.5x21 but nice field of view which makes looking easier. Also Perseus double cluster. We were proper happy as both new to us. It was a good night sky. Mars, Saturn and Jupiter (with 3 moons showing). 4 meteors made the night. Top walk in the dark.

15/09/2024 - A visit to a couple of hills after sunset this evening in Strathdon, Aberdeenshire. First Clashenteple Hill, we reached the top not long after sunset. Then a twilight walk across to Ladylea Hill. Dark by the time we got there. We sat by the small cairn and had our tea. It was a bit chilly in the wind but the big moon and stars were great and a few good meteors went shooting by. A good trip.

Ladylea Hill. Night time now. Dark. Photo is a small cairn and a thumbs up lit by a headtorch. After about an hour sitting by the cairn having our tea and watching the night sky, it was time to head home.
