Found a lovely concrete historical detail in one of Joseph Addison's "Spectator" essays from 1711/12. He's talking about how Londoners are crazy for news, by implication from the Continent.

"A westerly wind keeps the whole town in suspense, and puts a stop to conversation."

Because the news rides sailing ships to London.
