The Committee unanimously agreed that #risk of #international #spread of #poliovirus remains a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (#PHEIC) and recommended the extension of Temporary #Recommendations for a further three months.

Technical updates were received about the situation in: Afghanistan, Cameroon, France, Ghana, Indonesia, Nigeria, occupied Palestinian territory (oPt), Pakistan, Spain, and Zimbabwe.

WHO has just declared the rise in #mpox cases a public health emergency of international concern (#PHEIC). "The detection and rapid spread of a new clade of mpox in eastern DRC, its detection in neighboring countries that had not previously reported mpox, and the potential for further spread within Africa and beyond is very worrying",
WHO's director general Tedros said in the presser just now.

>17k suspected #mpox cases & 517 deaths have been reported on the African continent so far this year, a 160% increase in cases compared to the same period last year, the #Africa #CDC said. A total of 13 countries have reported cases.

A different form of the mpox virus — clade llb - spread globally in 2022, largely through sexual contact….This prompted the #WHO to declare a #PublicHealth emergency then, which it ended 10 months later.

Determining a disease #outbreak as a "#PublicHealth emergency of international concern" or #PHEIC - the WHO's highest level of #alert — can accelerate #research, #funding & #international public health measures & co-operation to contain a #disease.

The outbreak in #Congo began w/the spread of an #endemic strain, known as #cladeI. But a new variant, #cladeIb, appears to spread more easily through routine close contact, including sexual contact.
