Day 16 cont 🏡🏠🏚️🏚️🏡🏡🏠🏠🏡

“One is left to wonder, why do parties of both major #political persuasions keep doing things which they know will put upward pressure on #house #prices, and thus exacerbate the #problem they say they are trying to solve?

It’s hard to avoid the conclusion that the reason is that they know there are only about 110,000 people who each year succeed in becoming first home buyers. And even if you assume that for every one who does, there are five or six who don’t, that’s still only 700,000 or so votes, tops, for policies that might restrain the rate of house price inflation or halt it altogether.

Politicians also know that at any point in time there are more than 11 million voters who own their own homes, and more than 2.25 million who own at least one investment property. The last thing those 11 million to 13 million voters want is anything that might restrain – let alone halt – the rate of property price #inflation.” — #SaulEslake

Looking for ideas for building a little #Rstats function.

Let's say I asked a bunch of people if they felt older, younger, or the same age as half a dozen randomly-selected ages.

Let's say that because that's what I did.

Example: Jane is asked this question about ages 17, 19, 25, 38, 41, and 52.

Each person answers younger/same/older to each of the ages (each person also gets a different selection of ages to answer).

Ultimately, I want to use those answers to get an estimate of the age each person feels. First, however, I want to see how numerically consistent each person's answers are.

Examples: if Jane said
17: older
19: older
25: older
38: same age
41: younger
52: younger

That's numerically consistent. However, if she said

17: older
19: younger
25: older
38: same age
41: older
52: younger

that's not consistent (she can't be both younger than 19 and older than 41).

It's also consistent if she said she felt younger than all the ages or older than all of them.

Maybe because it's late or maybe because I'm slow, I'm having a hard time approaching this. I'll leave it on the back burner for a couple of days since it's late where I am and I won't have time for it tomorrow.

If any of y'all (and many of you are ridiculously more quantitatively skilled than I am) have ideas of how to approach a function for this, or -- even better -- if a solution already exists as a formula or something, lay it on me. I'll be in your debt*.

🧵 …this is not surprising, but the gullible do not notice it. In my opinion, commercial is always exploitative and has little to nothing to do with the apparent exchange of content.

And of course, this 15% built into the prices is also charged to out-of-country buyers, when GST/HST/PST are not actually due on the sale. So the rest of the world sees a price that is 15% higher than it should be, and any taxes/import duties on their end will also be calculated on top of this tax!

It's hilariously stupid, if it's not affecting you. It's tragically infuriating if it is.

So... Canada accounts for a tiny slice of my sales. It makes sense; Canada's population isn't that big, so most of my sales are to the USA, Europe, South America, Australia, etc.

I'll just stop selling to buyers in Canada, with a note in my shop explaining why.

New #problem!

While Etsy lets you control which countries you ship to, "You must ship to your own country". I cannot turn off delivery to Canada in my shop settings.

I'll see what Etsy support says about this. 103.9% certain they won't know what I'm talking about, and when I finally get them to understand, they'll say "Dunno, I can't do anything about that".

In which case, I guess I shut my Etsy shop for good. If there's a sales platform company out there that makes it harder for sellers to actually sell goods to buyers, I would be fascinated to hear about it.

More #Etsy stupidity. Every time I have a #problem with Etsy, I contact their #support (with great difficulty), and after re-explaining things a few times to the drones who are just pasting irrelevant #canned responses into their replies, I finally get across to them that there is an #issue their #FAQs don't address.

At which point they cannot solve it. Of course. But it seems like they *also* give me a new #problem without a #solution.

“Utility-first detractors complain a lot about how verbose this is and, consequently, how ugly. And it is indeed. But you’d forgive it that if it actually solved a problem, which it doesn’t. It is unequivocally an inferior way of making things which are alike look alike, as you should.”

I am having some kind of iCloud problem that's driving me insane. If anyone has ideas, please share them.

A few days ago I sent an image through Messages on iOS to a group and got a "Not Delivered" marker next to it. Tried a few times -- same. I can click and send as SMS, and it goes through. I then noticed this same behavior happening on my Mac.

According to my phone, I am logged into my iCloud account. I then noticed an alert in Settings on iOS saying to "Update Apple ID Settings." So, I go to do so and see (image attached):

-- -- -- --
Update Apple ID Settings
Some account services required you to sign in again.

[Continue]
-- -- -- --

When I click continue, the waiting glyph spins for 2-3 seconds and then stops -- nothing happens. Over and over. Rebooting the phone (and on last reboot it picked up the latest iOS update) made no difference.

( Also I see my iCloud backup has not run in 2 weeks and I got a warning - so I clicked "Backup Now," which rebooted the phone... )

I then went to logout of iCloud and received a series of "enter password to logout of" this or that service, then finally warned about all data on the phone being deleted in so doing, choose what I want to retain, etc.

Christ.

Is there another path here other than the monumental event of logging out of iCloud with all the ramifications that come with?

Extremely aggravating. Thanks, anyone.
