Summer is watching the quail invasion closely, but as long as they stay in their appointed area she won't bother them. Not even a bark.
That being the case, I was able to get a couple of pictures.
The quail come and go depending on the time of year, but now they are back in impressive numbers.
I think they stop by to see what the ducks are eating for breakfast. There is always enough for company.

GOBBLING QUAIL

The traditional calendar tells us that from December 7-11th the 'cold sets in, winter begins' (閉塞成冬 'sora samuku fuyu to naru').

In the short run-up to New Year, some whimsical sweets begin to appear...such as Toraya's (とらや) 'quail' (鶉餅 'uzura mochi').

Northern Bobwhite Quail. We hear their whistled "bob-WHITE" near the house every day in summer. Rarely do we see the birds.

This morning, this guy was in the yard underneath the sycamore tree.
